Just as a note on HINs. Prior to 1972 the HINs were INSIDE the starboard stern (typically). This has always been a random topic among manufacturers.
As of 1972, the VIN is required to be embossed into the fiberglass near the top of the starboard transom, or the starboard hull near the top just forward of the transom. As Rod Johnson so well describes:
On CALs built after Nov 1. 1972 there will be a Hull ID number molded into the outside of the transom,
It SHOULD be within 2" of the top of the transom, offset to starboard and begin with "CAB".
The Format will be like "CABccxxxM75m" or "CABccxxxmm75". The mm in the latter are months with Jan=01, Feb=02,…
CAB = CAL BOATS
cc = code for 33-2 (it will be numbers, but I don't remember the exact code, hence cc)
xxx = Class # (on older CALs we call this the Hull#) – the Hull number is usually the sail number (unless a PHRF rating number was used or the PO bought someone else’s sails).
M75m = Code for 1975 Model Year with "m" being the letter code for the month of build. (A = August, B = Sept., C = Oct, ....... L = July and the model year ran August 1974 to July 1975)

Sail numbers are a pretty good indicator, I have no idea where the number is etched into the hull on a Cal 33, if it is..... Since your boat is an 86, the VIN number on the registration is probably the hull number. I assume there is nothing in the usual spot (transom, starboard side near the top).

Charlie, it changed again in 1984, about mid-year.
I do not have an exact example for CALs built after mid-1984, but since
the CALs were by then being built at the O'DAY Factory in Fall River, MA,
I would assume that the HIN format would be the similar as used by O'DAY
at that time. (substituting CAB for the XDY used by O'DAY)
CABxhhhhMnyy
Again, CAB = CAL Boats
x = Model code (might have been 2 digits for the CALs)
hhhh = Hull# (might have only used 3 digits, hhh if CAL used 2 digits for
Model code?)
M = month of build
n = Last digit in build year
yy = Model Year
Assuming CAL still used their Model code as before, I would estimate a
1986 CAL 33 to have a HIN like : CAB33hhhF686 (assuming boat built in
June 1986, with hhh = hull number)
One person who might know the actual format, would be Rudy Nickerson at
D&R Marine, so the next time that you contact him about CAL 25 rubrail
(or I visit him about parts for my O'DAY DS II) it would be worth asking
about this, worst case is that he admits that he doesn't know, best case
is that he may clear up my uncertainty?

Very informative. Thanks Charlie. So, my 1967 CAL 34 hull number 13 would have been HIN 13. The Ohio Div Watercraft required an HIN at the exterior starboard transom and assigned an HIN conforming to standard format. I didn't notice an HIN inside the starboard transom from the manufacturer, but I'll look again. Now I understand it would have been considered as simply HIN 13.

Well, Kieran, sort of. Your hull number as far as the manufacturer is concerned is 13. It would be the 13th boat of that model manufactured (unless there were multiple concurrent manufacturing sites, but that is tomorrow’s topic right after the differential calculus session).
For the legal and marine worlds, the HIN of the boat is the whole wad – Manufacturer ID, Boat Model ID, Hull Number, Date of Manufacture. The number 13 would indeed appear in the HIN.
The hull number (in your case 13) would indeed be inside the starboard transom for a 1967 boat as was the practice at Jensen Marine. Might be painted over. You might also find the hull number written under some drawers or some other parts where the manufacturer used the info apportion parts among the boats under construction.
In the earlier days of fiberglass boat mass production, it was kind of the Wild, Wild West.
Hope This Helps
Cheers
