Hey, we heard about the fire early, the dock, U-dock, 1st one by the bridge in the upper (back) harbor. Just happens to be the one first to wipe out in the tsunami. Four boats on the end, one sunk, maybe a person missing. Some awesome shots on KSBW twitter from this morning. Sad and scary. Person who called us thought it was formerly ours cal 29 Noah's Kid, because of position of visible mast but NK is on J dock further back. Our 2-27 Ex Indigo is on lower front harbor. Helen and Ed. Thanks Tom. If we can get out of the harbor, we've been talking about sailing over to your side of the bay, or maybe meet up at moss landing and catch a dinner at elkhorn YC. For starters. This is really scary. Our boats are all close together in marinas, so we're all dependent on everybody keeping things safe. I tend to worry more in the winter, when my older boat lives indoors in a marina storage building. There, the boats are _really _close together. A fire would be disastrous. A few years back the marina issued an edict that only factory-made power cords would be allowed, no homemade devices. I had a homemade device and grumbled because I'm careful. But I realized that it was based on genuine safety concerns, so I bought a real power cord to keep the marina police off my back (and to be a good citizen). Long ago I read an article about the U.S. having a lower rate of building fires than many other countries. The author attributed that to having and enforcing good electrical and mechanical codes. That gave me renewed respect for code requirements, which we all grumble about from time to time. I recall reading about a marina fire some years back in which a Concordia yawl, Ray Hunt's claim to immortality, was damaged along with a lot of other nice boats. /WoodenBoat/ magazine had an article on the restoration. The shipwright mentioned talking to the boat, telling the owner that he assumed the owner talked to the boat, so he did, too. I was kinda embarrassed that I hadn't been more vocal so I started talking to my boats, too. Maybe that sounds nutty, but when you've owned and sailed a boat for a long time, they're more than just fiberglass and stainless steel.
