Can you send me a pic of your collapsed step? My step looks kind of weird and I want to be sure that's its not the same issue.

When the mast base of my Cal 24-1 looked crumbled, I wrapped it in kevlar cloth and West Systems. I think that was a dozen years ago. So far so good, but I think there was more left of my mast base than what you have there, which on one side is nothing. It may be worth a try, however. The space between my swivel mast base (tabernacle) and the cabin trunk was also turning into Milk of Magnesia too. I dug it out, and stuffed it with West Sytems and colloidal silicone filler. Again, a dozen years ago. Knock on [fiberglas covered] wood. At least I don't think I have any rot in my overhead. I think. But I do see ugly black stains thru the clear polyester. What dat?Jerry of Shpritz, ye venable Cal 24-1 kit boat.

HYSOL EA-9430 GLUE is a structural 2-part epoxy that is stronger than anything I have ever used. It is used in aircraft. It mixes thick as is but a bit of colloidal silicone filler can be used to keep it from running. The Hysol will not get totally brittle, it is tough.
Aircraft Spruce is one source: http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/wppages/hysol.php?clickkey=178202

If it will help, I happen to have a Cal 25 (the original from 1972) mast, rigging and step available that I am sellilng. You'd have to pick up the mast in West Michigan.

Lots of questions…masts for sale, etc.
Thank you for that.
My original question was..what SHOULD a deck-stepped mast base look like?
Someone asked me for pics…so I submitted them.
Black stains are from the sealant I put around the plates…to stop leaks. When you wipe that sticky crap, it gets nasty looking, I guess. However, it’s not leaking.
But I still don’t know what it should look like.
: )
Thanks.
I’m going out on the water.

Tom-
I can send you a picture next time I visit my boat at the yard. I can tell you right now that mine looks entirely different, I have no thru-bolt and it is solid to the deck. It looks like the PO for your boat rigged a way to step/unstep the mast, possibly to trailer the boat. Just so you know, the mast on the 2-25 is longer than the original 25.

Thanks Mike.
I know the PO or even prior, did a bunch to rig it for single-handing.
Roller-fuller for the jib, ran the sheets back to the cockpit, lazy-jacks on the main, added an auto-helm unit, some nice Raymarine digital units, a rader reflector and two 5 gallon portable fuel cans...he was ready to go sailing!
Why the mast base alteration? I dont know but so far, she works!
The guy i bought it from is now sailing around to Md. He's in Costa Rica at the moment.
I've asked him about the base also and am waiting for a reply...if knows anything.
Meanwhile, i'll keep internetting to see what else is out there.

Mike, you are absolutely right. That mast dropping bolt is not original (and I would imagine it changes the stresses on the mast material a lot). I’ve seen a couple 25 flat decks with that mod. Also correct in that the 2-25 mast is 3 feet longer and the boom is shorter that a 25-1.
I once saw a 25-1 where the dreaded PO had caulked around the outside of the mast base! When we dropped the mast, there was about 10 inches of water inside the mast column, and the mast had almost rotted through. We used a lot of glas and epoxy in an attempt to rebuild it. Seemed to have worked.
On my deck stepped Cals, I put a small mouse hole at the base of the mast to make sure it drains. Picture available. This would obviously not be a problem with the swing bolt mod, since the hole at the mast base is huge.
Cheers
Charlie

What dat?

Can you send me a pic of your collapsed step? My step looks kind of weird and I want to be sure that's its not the same issue.
Thanks,

Hello everyone,For all you mid 80's cal 33.2 folks what is your fuel tank made from? I have a booklet that says mine is supposed to be stainless but that tank is not there and the current tank is molded into the haul and is fiberglass. I cant tell if it added or original.

My take is aluminum. Easily accessible under port cushions. Plate on the
tank shows a date of 2001, so not original.

Our 1988 Val 33-2 has a molded plastic tank. I believe it is the original tank

Our '86 33-2 has an aluminum fuel tank on the port side just forward of the galley sink. Looks original but I'm not sure.

It looks like the PO for your boat rigged a way to step/unstep the mast, possibly to trailer the boat. Just so you know, the mast on the 2-25 is longer than the original 25.
