Teak and Holly sole in Cal 33-2
NEWMAN2017-02-20 22:06 UTC
I need to replace my cabin sole in my 1986 Cal 33-2. I think existing
plywood is 1/4" thick. I am contemplating going back with 3/8" thick teak
and holly plywood.
Anyone know, will 3/8" thickness cause me any fit problems? I am thinking
1/8" thicker shouldn't cause a problem. I found a website with a reasonable
price for the plywood. After some measuring it looks like I need more than
one sheet, no more than two.
Thanks for any input.

I don’t know off hand what the original is. IF it is ¼ and you go with 3/8, the only things I can think of are:
1. The sole butts up against the pan around the edges. You might have to route a border on the underside around the edge to eliminate the sole being higher than the surrounding glass.
2. The table support will be a tight fit, and may cause stress on the cabin overhead. You could solve this by routing out a recess for the base plate.

Al,
Thanks. Table support is held above with a ring pin through upper bracket
and pole. I feel I can modify to handle the added floor height.
Pan is another story. I am a little concerned that the plywood might not
look right. But as memory serves the stern area is where it might be an
issue. Along both sides the plywood butts against tall sides. An on bow
side as well. I was hoping another 33-2 owner had replaced their sole and
had experience to share. May end up I'll have some in a few more weeks as
the weather is warming and I want to get started so we're ready to go back
in the water early spring.

Greg,
Thanks. I don't mind the labor of going back with the same I'll remove.
Looks like $218 is the going rate for 4x8 sheet of teak & holly. Other
place I found (homestead ) was about same price. Shipping is killer as
well.

The broker convinced the PO he should replace the teak and holly sole prior to the sell. So, I do not know the original thickness of the sole. I always assumed the replacement was thinner than the original due to the gap at the galley cabinet. All other perimeter is resting on a ledge from the fiberglass hull liner.
The carpenter put solid teak around the bilge access. I am not certain, but if I recall correctly, I thought it was 3/8"-1/2" thickness. 1/4" seams too thin for the spans.

I agree 1/4" seems too thin, but I am fairly sure mine is that thin. I'm
going down to the boat this coming weekend and will measure again. That is
why I'm thinking going back with 3/8" if not already.

We replaced the sole on our 1987 33-2 several years ago. I can't find a copy of the order but measuring the leftovers it appears to be 7/16". We purchased 2 4x8' sheets and needed both although there is some left over. 1 sheet would not have done the job.
We put 7/16 strips of solid teak between pieces of the ply.
Some photos of the project which took about 3 weekends with 2 people working are attached. We coated the ply and solid teak with 3 coats of varnish. It has held up very well but given our pride in the job we keep rugs on a good portion of it.
Let us know if we can be of additional help.
Jim and Erica
P.S. Yep the shipping was pretty steep. On the other hand it would have cost about 4 times as much if we had hired someone to do the project.

The question was “what is the original thickness of the sole”. I was on a 1987 Cal 33 today (being surveyed because I will likely buy it). I measured the sole thickness at 7/16”, matching Jim’s observation.

Thank you very much. I already got a quote from my yard just to see. They
quoted me $5000 to replace the sole. Labor and materials. So, it was a no
brainer that I was going to do the job. I do appreciate all that info and
the pics. I must be mistaken, but my 1986 seems to have very thin plywood.
I'll be checking on that this weekend.
The pics with the plywood removed will be very helpful. Thanks again.
