Cal 33 Starboard Settee Conversion
dh… [at] gmail.com2017-02-23 14:58 UTC
I have seen photos of the two extra cushions used to convert the starboard settee into a large berth. Seems like the obvious thing to do. What is not obvious is how the extra cushions are supported from beneath. Any information on the best way to do this would be appreciated (photos even better). A system that stows well and takes up minimum extra space is most desirable. Thanks in advance.

Hi Doug,
On my Cal 33-2 the extra cushions are supported by a plywood board (about 5/16 or 3/8?) that stores under the normal cushions. Board slides out for use and outer edge (toward the centerline) is supported by a pair of clever legs. The legs are cut from / in the board and are hinged to swing down.

As stated, there is a 3/8" piece of plywood that slips from under the main
cushions. It has a wood lip on top, outer edge, that helps hold the
cushions in place when slid under them. On the stern side is a leg that
folds down. The leg is basically a cut out of the plywood board to make the
leg, so when the leg folds up it is recessed in the hole it came from.
I found a brokerage that had a Cal 33-2 for sale with picture gallery.

Look at 'STB SDE MAIN SALON FROM MAIN HATCH' picture.
In this picture, the wide cushion, at its base is the wood lip I speak of.
You grab that to pull the plywood out, then drop down the leg. The leg has
a barrel bolt type latch (just the bolt part) and you push that into a hole
that is in the floor. The bolt keeps the leg from moving. On mine there is
also a bolt towards the bow side that slips into a hole.
Bolt like this one...

Thanks for the extra detail Leslie.
The wood lip is currently mounted to a non-moving structure. Makes sense to move it to the slide-out 3/8” ply. Similar to the way the v-berth has a lip on its slide-out.
The information on the barrel bolts helps too. I think I can imagine the details of the fold-down ply leg, at least good enough to fabricate something like it that will work.
Too bad Cal Boats made this feature an option instead of standard.

I was at our boat today. We removed the cabin sole. 4 hours hard labor.
While there I took several pictures of the support piece. Will upload them
to photobucket and send the link.
