outhaul question

Kevin Swart2017-03-08 19:47 UTC
I'm redoing my outhaul this winter and would like some opinions on whats necessary. I have an external 3:1 block and am going to set up and additional internal block system as well. I can go with a 3:1 or 4:1 system. I sail a 1970 Cal 25-1. Thanks! Kevin Cal25 SV Panache

I added a 4 to one system. I never hear anyone complaining about too much advantage. I had 20:1 on my L-36 with the old boom. I am doing 16:1 on the new rig. Others like 3:1 as more than enough. I think it depends on when you want to adjust it. If you only do it off the wind or in the middle of a tack, or let the sail out to adjust it, then 3:1 is fine. If you want to tighten the sail up when you are in strong winds on a beat, the more the better. So the real answer it, it depends and anything will work. Hi, Kevin. Here’s an opinion on a different way to do it. I don’t like to have blocking arrangements or even lines inside a boom or mast where I cannot get to them in case of failure. I run a single main clew line through blocks at the back of the boom, then through a block under the boom, and down to a 4:1 block set between the boom and mast plate at the deck. The single feed line from the 4:1 arrangement then exits to the deck organizer and back to a cam cleat on the cabin top at the cockpit. I can adjust the outhaul from the driving position. Looks like this. Lots of blocks, but has not caused me problems, and I can see/get to the whole arrangement. They also make boxes that go inside the boom and end caps that allow the outhaul line to enter the boom at the back. I’ve seen these on 25s, but as I said, I am not a fan. Since we race Frostbites all winter in Annapolis, and we are not allowed on deck during a race, I have a lot of lines coming back to the cockpit. Just an idea that works for me. I run 1/8 in TECHNORA forward to the gooseneck and down, with a 6:1 tackle with Harken Bullet blocks. The less friction, the better, and if it needs help slackening I give the TECHNORA a tug backwards. Works like a charm. Plus, we get a view of a real Cal ribbed sliding hatch cover, a familiar sight. Our winter has been so strange here, radically warm for extended stretches then back to cold again. We're going from mid 50s to a high of 20 tomorrow, all within 7 days. That has been going on for over a month. I normally like my winter season but this one has been entirely undependable. And I've only had to clear the snow off the Cal 20's winter cover two times. If the winter is going to wimp out on us, then I'm ready for spring. Chris Campbell > >

Yes, Chris. Strange indeed. I don’t know what clothes to put on in the morning these days. Dug out the shorts last week, but… Sock burning season in Annapolis over the next few weeks.
