Lazy jacks on a Cal 2 34
fs… [at] torchlake.com2017-03-08 16:51 UTC
Hi All,
I'm about to start sewing the new sail cover for my Cal 2 34. I want to incorporate the slits for lazy jacks but I don't yet have the lazy jacks installed, (project 567...) . Is there a standard measurement I can use for how far back on the boom the lazy jacks would be placed and therefore be able to calculate the measurements for how far back to put the slits in the sail cover?
Thanks for the input.

How about retractable lazy jacks? They are VERY easy to construct AND eliminates the issue.

Others have made the same suggestion but my sense is that the
retractable ones aren't as solid. Perhaps that's my inexperienced take
on it but I'd rather go with the "permanent" ones.

A couple years ago I broke my old skinny boom and put in a better one on my Cal 34 Mk1, Soufflé. In the process of having it re-rigged my rigger put in a very nice retractable system. It works well and easy to deploy. Before, I had had a system that was always in place, and found it had problems, such as occasionally snagging on things and at the very worst of times. It also rubbed against the sail all the time, and its proximity to the sail reduced the sail’s efficiency.

Ok, upon further research you all have sold me on the retractable
system. Thanks for your input and education. Always greatly appreciated.

Search Google for lazy jacks design for lots of "how to" sites. Beware of expense kits. You can build a very effective easy to use system on you own for about $50+/- of supplies.
A terrific resource is Tim Lackey. He has restored many boats AND he is a master website designer. His website projects feature lots of good photos and detail instructions:

I scratched my head on this for a while and went with Regatta braid and
plastic thimbles. Ran lines through blocks seized to the spreaders.

Thanks for the feedback Cap'n Bob.
I was checking these guys out yesterday. Do you feel it's worth the
money going this route? I know there are cheaper ways to go but I'm also
a fan of kits.
Would love to see some pictures if you have any.
Have a great weekend,
