I am looking to replace vinyl headliner with semi-rigid flexible panels. Opinions and experience will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!Michael

I have seen a number of boats use FRP as headliner with great looking results. FRP should be available from your local big box building source, Home Depot or lowes. Standard is white, but also comes in beige colors and special order, black, silver and other shades.
4x8 sheets are standard, special order 4x10 can be had as well. Check you local building supply store that carries metal stud and drywall, acoustical ceiling. May be cheaper thru that source as well. Brand names, Marlite, sequentia, glass steel etc. do not mix brands as colors vary.
White panels with teak dividers and end caps looks clean and sharp.

Michael,
I replaced my Cal2-39 forepeak headliner last year.
I went with vinyl glued to plywood for the flat areas and vinyl glued to
foam to the fiberglass overhead for the inside of the cabin doghouse.
This is just as the factory had originally installed. The plywood had
delaminated and the foam deteriorated over the last 40 years.
I used 5mm underlayment plywood and 3M 80 spray adhesive from home
depot, marine grade vinyl from a local supplier (Keyston Bros) and 1/4"
ss staples.
I did it on the our marina docks in 3 or 4 days with a saber saw and a
stapler.
see pictures.
You could go with the pre-finished panels and save some gluing and
stapling effort if you have no curved surfaces to cover or don't need
the areas to match.
Good luck,
Duane

These are great pictures! I, too, have headliner replacement on the list
for my '75 Cal 2 34. I can't figure out what you attached it with, (the
buttons on the finish edge?). My foam is already in place and I have a
soft naugahyde all cut out and ready to install but can't quite figure
out how to do the spray upside down, let alone install it single
handedly. The previous owner put the foam in as he was planning on
finishing it with semi rigid panels, (I think they're called sterlite?)
Input would be greatly appreciated.

Faith,
The 3 M80 spray glue comes out like spider webs and will spray up onto
the inner deck and stick. I applied two coats to the foam.
I masked all areas below the sprayed area with Kraft paper and old
sheets because some spray does not go where you want it.
You need to spray the naugahyde, as well, and let both surfaces dry for
10 min. Then you can just stick up the vinyl and it will stay in place.
I recommend cutting the vinyl oversize, and trim it later, as it is
difficult to adjust the position after you start sticking it in place.
My original headliner panels were 1/8 plywood and were held up with
velcro in the center and with trim at the hatch and around the edges,
and buttons at the exposed aft end.
I installed industrial velcro, but with the thicker plywood I used, the
velcro really didn't have much effect (except insuring an airspace above
the ply) .
Also with the thicker stiffer ply attachment only at the edges is
sufficient to keep it in place.
The velcro would probably work well with more flexible1/8 thick material.

Duane

This spray glue thing sounds like a good application for those shower caps they have in the hotels. I “procured” a supply for over the head fiberglas work and various cleaning tasks. Wadded hair does not brush well.

Although it's not exactly analogous, I did Naugahyde on reflectix for my hull liner. The spray (I used 3M Super 77) is very sticky and great adhesion, although I recommend some more adhesive (glue gun perhaps) along the edge. I really like the results, although it does not sound as hard to do as headliner. Reflectix would not be good for that purpose because it isn't rigid. One word to the wise, if you're going to use the spray stuff, you really have to spray in a well ventilated area.
