I built up a badly deteriorated strut with bondo and used it as a pattern to have a sand casting made locally. Worked great! It was the original bronze and suffered from electrolysis. We pulled the strut and took it to the local propeller & strut shop here in Fort Lauderdale. About a week later, we had a new SS strut ready to install. If I recall, the price was in the range of $700. I'm not aware of where you could get a bronze replacement. It might possibly be welded and add metal if the joining above can take a little heat and cooling. Maybe coat the whole thing in epoxy with glass particles mixed and try to cover all bronze but the bearing. Anyone have anymore idea's? They braced it somehow to maintain the alignment while doing the glass work. Has never been a problem since. They put a LOT of fiberglass in that repair! While the yard was pressure washing the bottom, large pieces of paint and filler began popping off of the keel. My wife and I spent the day chipping the paint off of the entire keel. As you all know, the yard list grows the second you pull the boat out! The lead of the keel was in very good shape and I was impressed by the care that went into the molding of it. We scuffed the surface and applied 2 coats of a 2-part epoxy made for the purpose. I spoke with one of the yard foreman and he asked if the keel was electrically bonded and I told him that everything appeared to be bonded on this boat. He stated that they have seen boats with bonded keels lose the paint from that surface and that it is a possible indication of an electrical issue (it is also possible that the keel was not prepped properly for the paint). We walked the rest of the metallic objects below the waterline and noticed that all of the bronze thru hulls had a dark, scaly buildup around them. These are bonded. The shaft strut is also bonded but it has a zinc attached. It was pristine. I have read articles on bonding and have seen strong arguments for and against bonding. It seems that East coast boats are more likely to have extensive bonding systems to deal with the higher potential for a lightning strike. I have started to review the wiring on my boat in an effort to expose any problems ( I found several wiring issues on my last boat). I have removed the bond wires from the thru hull fittings and the diver and I will keep an eye on them. Have any of you experienced issues related to bonding? Re-read my post. Should have been more specific. The strut itself was in fine shape — no corrosion at that time. What was in terrible shape was where the strut attached to the boat. It was flexing and was breaking the fiberglass to the point you could move it 1/4” by hand. I had noticed a banging in the aft 1/4 berth and that was the cause. Hauled it because I needed bottom paint as well. Glad I did. So, the only fix I needed to the strut was where it attached to the structure of the boat. Upon removal of the old glass it was determined that they did not need to go in from the 1/4 berth side, but could build new glass work from the hull side of the boat. And they added a LOT of fiberglass. It is still in excellent condition. Not at all certain how it missed the electrolysis that damaged the other through hulls, but I am guessing because it is the one piece of metal on the boat that was not bonded.
