Cal 33 'Puffin' cabin sole replacement

NEWMAN2017-03-16 20:28 UTC
Work is progressing on replacing the cabin sole in Puffin, our 1986 Cal 33. We have demo'ed the sole and was able to get all but the V birth sections out in one piece so had good templates. Used my timber framing chisels to drive under the plywood and pry. The floor was glued down with some kind of white silicone. The chisel method worked very good. I made a paper template and successfully shaped a new piece for the V birth since that piece had to be partially destroyed to get it up. Here are some pictures of the work. We are now waiting for warmer weather so I can seal the plywood (top, edges and bottom). Then we will apply varnish. I still need to add some teak trim pieces, but for the most part the floor sections are fitted and we have them home awaiting sealer. I plan to reuse two of the center sections. Leslie Newman Virginia This past Sunday. The boat yard has already painted Puffin's bottom. My wife Claire working very hard. V Birth piece

Leslie, Puffin is identical to my boat — they could be twins!! I refinished my cabin sole 5 years ago, but did not seal the bottom of the plywood as you are doing and it now needs replacing. I guess QE is next! Don, Aren't they just fantastic boats. I find them very pleasing to the eye. We really enjoy Puffin and she's pretty quick. I am planning to seal using the Smith's epoxy. https://www.star-distributing.com/smith/products.html Recommended by the place we bought our teak and holy plywood. I bought the varnish from Jamestown Distributing. Purchased the TotalBoat Gleam 2.0 Spar Varnish. The description makes it sound easier to apply. When we removed the old floor the only sections that were sealed underneath were the two stern pieces each side of the engine. All the other sections were bare wood. Well, the two middle sections I am reusing were also sealed, but the majority of the floor was not sealed. I think it was the original flooring, so lasted a fairly long time. We had a soft spot in front of the settee. Felt like your foot would go through the floor. Plywood was separating badly and very weak in one spot. Plus the teak and holy veneer was starting to peel up on the two stern pieces. Most likely from when the stuffing box water spilled from under the engine compartment at times we heeled over after a long period of being under motor and then started sailing. I didn't always have the stuffing box adjusted correctly. I now have that better stuffing material that allows a tighter adjustment, much less drip. But the damage was done to the floor over the years and it was time for a new floor. Weather looking warm for Sunday and I think I will try to get the sections sealed. It takes several days for the Smith's to cure, so maybe by next weekend we'll be down there doing some installation. Fair winds! Update on cabin sole replacement. I got all the new pieces cut and fitted. Now have five coats of varnish, after first sealing with Smiths penetrating sealer. Still need to do one more fitting at the boat so I can fit some teak trim strips. Hopefully be done in another weekend. I appologize for attaching pics but I cannot get logged into Yahoo to put them there. Leslie Puffin 1986 Cal 33. i

Good looking floors! Send a picture of the finished project too please. :) Include how its done around the mast. Mine has a nifty little piece you drop in behind the mast. Thanks. I haven't cut the new mast piece yet. My plan is to measure and cut that once the other pieces are in place. The original piece was so delaminated I cut one slit in the small section of it and bent it to get it out. I have a plan for getting the new piece in place. I'll post pics after I have it constructed. Leslie On Sunday, March 26, 2017, matthew <ma… [at] yahoo.com> wrote: > Good looking floors! I used two pieces;one fit behind the mast and the other in front. This seemed a lot easier, and cheaper than unstepping the mast. It looks fine. Sorry no pictures at the moment..

Thanks, yes I plan on two pieces as well. I am thinking I will have a smaller section on the back 1/4 of the piece so that I can slip the main piece into place, then put the back 1/4 piece down. Underneath have some wood strips that will allow me to screw each section down, holding the two pieces together as one. Hard to explain. I'll take pictures of my finished product. It is clear in my head anyway :) Leslie On Tue, Mar 28, 2017 at 11:14 AM, ge… [at] msn.com [Cal_Boats] < Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com> wrote: > > > I used two pieces;one fit behind the mast and the other in front.
