My plan is to get a new one while i refninsh the exisitng and have a spare. The current piece is delamimating. I dont know if the present piece is original, likely it is, but besides moment arm (torque), do i care about the shape? Is rise or drop crucial, beyond personal comfort? I see a nice one with a slightly higher rise than current. Are there Implications i should comsider? I tend to overthink things sometimes. Also, a search suggests that the original had a drop, not a rise. Any information is appreciated. Thank you. ..tom in Monterey, Ca.

Good morning Randy, I've found suppliers but i'm more asking about the geometry. Other than the obvious personal comfort and torque from length, is there any difference. I'm measuring everything but since I'm not certain mine is original, my only baseline data is skewed. I know clearances for the cockpit, rails, gunwales, lazarettes, etc. What else should i care about? Ok..i know..maybe just replace it and sail. 🙂 > On Apr 1, 2017, at 8:23 AM, saylorran sa… [at] yahoo.com [Cal_Boats] <Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com> wrote: > > Wrst Marine use to carry them in their stores. Our Pearson 30 tiller was de laminating also. My step-dad (who worked at a paper mill) grabbed a Peavey handle and fit it to the jaws of the tiller head for "temporary" while he rebuilt the old one. Sold the boat a decade later with the Peavey handle still on it. I doubt it's been changed, it made a great, virtually indestructible, tiller. I'd do the same. Take your original tiller to Tractor Supply or similar and compare the butt end to replacement tool handles until you find a suitable one. Once it's fitted, then think about redoing the old one. If you're not out sailing...-------- Original message --------From: "TD tb… [at] verizon.net [Cal_Boats]" <Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com> Date: 4/1/2017 08:40 (GMT-08:00) To: Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com, saylorran <sa… [at] yahoo.com> Subject: Re: [Cal_Boats] 2-25 tiller Good morning Randy,I've found suppliers but i'm more asking about the geometry.Other than the obvious personal comfort and torque from length, is there any difference.I'm measuring everything but since I'm not certain mine is original, my only baseline data is skewed.I know clearances for the cockpit, rails, gunwales, lazarettes, etc. What else should i care about?Ok..i know..maybe just replace it and sail.🙂 On Apr 1, 2017, at 8:23 AM, saylorran sa… [at] yahoo.com [Cal_Boats] <Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com> wrote: Wrst Marine use to carry them in their stores. Hi, Tom. I’ve driven a 2-25 a couple times, but am trying to remember the tiller angle. As far as geometry goes, the important item is the angle of the tiller fork when in the down position. If a straight tiller [or curved down a bit – rise (-) ] will go over the seats in the bottom position, as I believe is the case in the 2-25, get one of those. On my flat deck 25, a straight tiller would hit the sides of the cockpit seats and you would have to lift the tiller to tack, so I got a curved one (second picture) actually specified for an O’Day 27. The teak strips on the seat in the second picture are heel plants for driver and crew when sitting on the coaming. Can help keep you on the boat. The only critical dimension is the width of the tiller fork (well maybe the length, too). I had to sand my tiller a bit on the sides for a good fit (then recoat, of course). For length, the longer you can get it, the father forward you can drive from, and the better the leverage. However, you also have to watch out for people’s legs and such and mobility around the cockpit. By the way, the fork width nicely fits a 2x4 stud (1.5 inches). Just drill the holes for the pattern and keep the 2x4 as an emergency tiller. You need to be careful using old tillers since there is a chance that it rotted from the inside, and will lack strength. Hope this helps. Charlie Annapolis Good morning Randy, I've found suppliers but i'm more asking about the geometry.
