ca… [at] aol.com2017-04-01 14:00 UTC
Hello Cal Owners,
Need to find a new home for my Cal 34 I have been sailing since 1972.
Have not had any success on Craigslist or Sailboatlistings.com in the last year.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. She is berthed in Charleston SC.

My suggestion is to finish painting and clean it up and take new pictures.
It looks a bit like a project boat from the pictures you have but I am sure
if you look past the tape and paint supplies, it is a well kept boat.
Present it as such. Make it look like a boat that is ready to sail.

Good advice. Cal owners can see past the "mess" and appreciate the work
you've done. I think she looks beautiful but others aren't going to see
it.
Also wanted to say that perhaps it's taking so long waiting for the
right person to come along who will appreciate her. The guy I bought my
Cal 2 34 from had her up for sale for 2 years before I came along and
wouldn't sell her to previous lookey loos cuz they couldn't wrap
themselves around all he had done to her and the classic she is. I don't
know if that matters to you. I bought mine on craig's list.
Would love to see those pictures when you get them up.

There's a Cal 34 in So Cal on the mkt. for 8k that needs work on her Atomic and the deck looks like a mess, and another Cal 34, a Mk 3 with a diesel, set up for cruzing, and the owner is asking 21.9K and is threatening to raise the price if no one takes it by the end of the week. It's a buyer's mkt. Sell a classic plastic boat is a beech...especially if you want fair mkt. value.

I was thinking about that this weekend. It was a work weekend. Get
that boottop cleaned up. Attack the corroded spots on the outboard
lower unit and get the rest of the crud off. Most of all, prep spots
where varnish has failed and then sand all the toe rails for their
annual recoat. This is the 49th year I've done this on that boat. If
the time comes to sell (should that be "when"?), you can bet I'll be
picky. And to give me the freedom to be picky, I try to keep up with
structural and functional items. This year it was the centerboard; next
year maybe a new mainsail.
And apropos of "center of effort," the marina developed a new incentive
policy about 15 years ago. They now require you to select a launch date
when you haul out in the fall. It's ostensibly to allow an orderly
extraction from the buildings, but it also discourages the "Oh, I'll do
it next weekend" mentality. Now they don't get a flood of phone calls
from owners who want to launch that week when summer arrives. That big
red notice on the calendar does focus the mind.

Of course, the definition of "fair market value" is what a willing buyer
and willing seller agree on. It's not the same as "bluebook value,"
which is some sort of historical lookback at sale prices, to give people
a rough idea of the range of values that might pertain. We sailors tend
to develop affection for our boats so we have an inclination to
overestimate value.
I'm always surprised at how people neglect cosmetics when they are
selling boats... or cars, or bicycles. We're all suckers for clean and
shiny, even when we ignore big issues. Didn't our parents teach us that
first impressions count? 'Tis true. So many boats are offered in the
same condition as when they were last sailed, except that there's a bit
more mold and mildew.

Selling older boats is hard. The price people are willing to pay is
dropping all the time and it has little to do w what you put in it. You
have two choices, hold out for your higher price or keep dropping the price
till it moves.
If you are enjoying the boat, then holding out may make sense, but keep in
mind the cost of having it. On the low end it probably costs 2-3k a year
to have it, so you have to weigh where the value is for you.

All good advice. I'll add my two cents. Good advertising is key. List all
the good stuff and have lots of pictures. And as others said, have it ship
shape. If it looks like it needs work that will scare away buyers. Just the
year 1969 alone is going to scare away some buyers. The boat has some age
on her. That is where listing all the improvements or maintenance helps.
Years ago my wife and I were selling our 1982 O'Day 34. One potential
buyer, the husband, really wanted it. But the wife said she didn't want an
old boat because it would have problems. We took them on a sea trial and
the boat did great. I said to the Husband "All boats are going to have some
problems. You have to pick your poison. I am being up front about the
condition of mine". They ended up not buying, but we sold to another person
that was more realistic about boats. This was in 2006 and he still have the
O'Day and enjoys it much.
About fair weather sailing, that sums it up for my wife and I now. We have
old photos of us at the wheel in parka and mittens. That just isn't fun
anymore. We still don't hesitate to go out in a blow, but I don't want it
to be real cold.
