2-27 mast compression issues
Donald Thomas2017-04-16 20:23 UTC
Hi everyone. With this boat I'm bringing back I need spreaders and see
occasionally owners outfit their spars with devices to absorb compressive
forces from the spreaders. This an issue? Here's a photo of the mast and
where the spreaders will be received. It appears this extra metal may have
anticipated this force. Your thoughts?

Don,
I made new spreaders for my CAL 34 with clear spruce I got from Aircraft Supply. This wood has no knots or imperfections. It was a job, but they turned out great.

Hi Don,My 1975 2-27 came to me with the setup in the photos. We (local yard gurus and I) are pretty certain the boat started life with factory wood spreaders and somewhere along the line they were upgraded to these cool aluminum ones that look like airplane control arms. They were too long at the ends so Svendsen's cut them down and added holes for seizing wire as well.
But the fittings at the mast appear to be original.
Also included is a photo of where my uppers connect to the mast. Nothing fancy, just a big bolt going through tangs. Reinforcing plates screwed to the mast. Looks OEM enough to me, but could very well have been added after it left the factory.
One note along these lines: when I replaced my stays & shrouds, I went up a size on everything. As you may have read elsewhere (or Steve Seals will tell you), they were under-spec'd to begin with so there's a history of broken masts. Recommend you consider the same. I have the receipts somewhere if you need sizes.Good luck!

I've read this thread and am a bit puzzled. But it sounds like the
inquiry was about compressive forces on the mast. The Cal 20 rig uses
spreaders attached via U-brackets and a through-bolt. The problem is
that a through-bolt will tend to compress the mast at that point. The
problem is avoided by using an aluminum tube inside the mast that the
bolt runs through. The tube takes the compression so the mast isn't
squeezed.

Thanks, these photos tell the story. Does the stay get attached in any way
to the end of the spreader or just flow freely being restrained from
jumping out of the track for it?
