cutlass bearing
Robert Weiss2010-03-25 20:17 UTC
Hello:
I am having trouble determining the dimenions of my cutlass bearing.
It does not seem to have a metal outer sleeve. My boat is a Cal 31 (1982).
I have measured the OD of the bearing as 1-1/8, but all the cutlass brgs. I have
seen are listed as 1-1/4 OD.
Can anyone help me with the dimensions.
Thank You,

most cutless bearing are named after 'Red Fish'
'black finn' 'Halibut' (morse) ... your old bearing is STILL in side your bronze prop shaft ...take a sawzall and carfull cut though old bearing then pull it out at on will be the name 'Salmon' stamped on out side of the bearing case ... that could be WHY yer 1/4" off.. good luck most yards charge $150-$300
berings $35-$85.

Problem is I have to drop the rudder to remove the shaft. I have a puller to remove
the brg with the shaft in place, so I cannot cut the brg. Shaft is 1" dia. So I need to
know the dimensions of the brg, especially the OD.

What you have is a "thin wall" bearing, with 1.125" OD. We have them in
stock, $39.

Hi
The yard rec a hak saw and make little cuts to collapse the bearng if it is in a strut
if its in a tube which the old Ericson E-30 you press it out from the inside
I have the hak saw on two boats Cal 29 and catalina 27
To ren-insatall freeze the bearing so that it will shrink tiny and hope it goes in
that is into a strut
just my 2 cents
Scott
cal 2-29

Was down at the yard today, and at one point just grabbed the propshaft and pulled, and it moved. Don't remember that happening before, but who knows at this point, I'm old and memory isn't what it used to be. Anyway it wasn't much, maybe a sixteenth. ?, or am I just borrowing trouble? About 3 more full work days and I'm ready to splash. Won't make Memorial Day, but the week after should work.David Dobbs
