Maybe they just vibrated loose and they bang was it coming off? You may not need to hual out. Undue it and turn the tranny by hand. If it feels good the bad vibration may just be being misaligned bad?Matthew, Warm Winds Cal 33.2 From: "Allen Edwards al… [at] gmail.com [Cal_Boats]" <Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com> Date: 5/30/17 3:04 PM (GMT-05:00) To: Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com, LOUIS JALLADE III <je… [at] comcast.net> Subject: Re: [Cal_Boats] Cal 33-2 propellar shaft I would get a diver to look at the cutlass bearing strut. I bolted it back together and now when I start it and put in in gear there is a lot of engine vibration. Plan on taking it to my local yard but am trying to determine the problem. Bent shaft or something wrong with the trans. I'm concerned about the loud bang we heard. Any ideas? Jeep Moonraker Cal 33-2

Ok I'll give it a try. This person's website is very helpful... http://www.yachtsurvey.com/Alignment.htm http://www.yachtsurvey.com/Alignment2.htm The link below is some technique if the boat is out of the water. I use feeler gauge, but never heard of using the square rods or wood blocks to center the shaft in the 'log'. It does sound very logical to do that so the shaft is centered. If you align in the water you'd of course not disconnect the stuffing box. http://www.cruisingworld.com/prop-shaft-alignment On Tue, May 30, 2017 at 2:56 PM, LOUIS JALLADE III je… [at] comcast.net (mailto:je… [at] comcast.net) [Cal_Boats] <Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com (mailto:Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com)> wrote: > > All, the other night I was heading back to my slip when the my propeller shaft starting to vibrate. Yeah, like the other day when I had an unexpected disc brake issue--caliper seizing up. The local Ford dealership replaced the front calipers. 15 mi. later I started the truck, put it in reverse, and head a loud bang. Turns out it was one of the two bolts holding the caliper on that was departing. The service tech had forgotten to tighten the bolts, two each side, both sides. Only one side actually lost a bolt, and luckily the caliper drifted into position when stopping going forward with the remaining bolt. Not good work. Moral of the story: a loud bang is always a bad thing. Chris Campbell

Sometimes you can dodge the bullet. It is amazing the shaft stayed in place with three bolts gone until the last bolt finally loosened. Hopefully the loud bang was just maybe a single rotation or two were the shaft spun out of alignment. The fact you shut it down immediately might have saved severe damage. But if you use the feeler gauge method and still have bad vibration of course you'll need to haul it. If mine I'd probably swim under and take a look at things as well as checking alignment with feeler gauge. I always do a visual of things when I first get underway. But I am also always checking the stuffing box for leaks, exhaust, etc. While glancing around I note the shaft coupling and such. One of these inspections recently alerted me to a leak coming from the stern, where I found three of the plastic thru hulls leaking when the stern was squatting during motoring. I replaced all those thru hulls. Leslie On Wed, May 31, 2017 at 11:00 AM, LOUIS JALLADE III je… [at] comcast.net [Cal_Boats] <Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com> wrote: > > > Ok I'll give it a try.
