Cal 33-2 propellar shaft

LOUIS JALLADE III2017-05-30 18:56 UTC
All, the other night I was heading back to my slip when the my propeller shaft starting to vibrate. All of sudden we heard a loud bang and immediately killed the power, When I got to the slip I found that all the bolts holding the shaft to the transmission except one, which was loose had come out. I bolted it back together and now when I start it and put in in gear there is a lot of engine vibration. Plan on taking it to my local yard but am trying to determine the problem. Bent shaft or something wrong with the trans. I'm concerned about the loud bang we heard. Any ideas? Jeep Moonraker Cal 33-2

I would get a diver to look at the cutlass bearing strut. Perhaps it got bent or some bolts there let go. I would first closely check all flexible engine mounts. There was evidently, a shock load imposed on the drive train, so the mounts may have damaged rubber components, or been separated from the engine. In that case, you will get the symptoms you describe. What make & model engine & trans are we discussing? Be sure to use grade 5 fasteners when replacing the coupler bolts. Did the bolts come loose or break? You may of hit something with your prop, and potentially bent the shaft. > On May 30, 2017, at 11:56 AM, LOUIS JALLADE III je… [at] comcast.net [Cal_Boats] <Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com> wrote: > > All, the other night I was heading back to my slip when the my propeller shaft starting to vibrate. You could check alignment yourself using a feeler gauge. This person's website is very helpful... http://www.yachtsurvey.com/Alignment.htm http://www.yachtsurvey.com/Alignment2.htm The link below is some technique if the boat is out of the water. I use feeler gauge, but never heard of using the square rods or wood blocks to center the shaft in the 'log'. It does sound very logical to do that so the shaft is centered. If you align in the water you'd of course not disconnect the stuffing box. http://www.cruisingworld.com/prop-shaft-alignment On Tue, May 30, 2017 at 2:56 PM, LOUIS JALLADE III je… [at] comcast.net [Cal_Boats] <Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com> wrote: > > > All, the other night I was heading back to my slip when the my propeller > shaft starting to vibrate. One other thing to be aware of is that this might have resulted in the clutch getting out of adjustment. I bought a Cal 33-2 which was moored at the Harlem Yacht Club. No issues with vibration at the sea trial. The boat was moved to a lake in Arkansas. Right after splashing the boat and running the engine, the whole drive system vibrated. At high rpm and with the transmission in gear, the vibration shook the whole boat. Checked out a lot of potential problems, including removing the Gori folder and replacing it, while in the water, it with a fixed blade prop. Still excessive vibration. Long story short—it turned out to be the clutch. Apparently the clutch lost its correct adjustment somewhere along the line and was grabbing/slilpping. Adjusted the clutch & vibration disappeared.
