Has anybody taken off the companionway hatch on a Cal 2 34?
fs… [at] torchlake.com2017-06-05 15:50 UTC
Greetings,
I'm hoping that someone out there has taken off the companionway hatch on their Cal 2 34 or any other Cal if they're all built the same way. I'm certain mine has never been disassembled and given the mold in the runner boards, (that's what I'm calling them because it seems to make sense) and on the inside of the hatch itself, it has to come to critical mass.
The only thing that makes sense to me is to take off the runner boards the hatch sits on, (which I started doing yesterday), in the hopes that once the 2 side boards are out and the horizontal board is loose, I'll be able to push the hatch aft and pull it all the way out.
It won't go forward because the lip can't get past the structure of the opening. It won't go aft with the running boards there because of the square "stop" behind the horizontal running board around the opening that has been put there for just that reason, to stop it.
So I've unscrewed the 3 running boards and loosened 2 of them. The horizontal board is ready to be pryed up and I'm just hoping this is going to work. I keep thinking there must be some other way in as it seems they've built it from the inside out which makes it certainly effective for keeping the water out but nearly impossible to clean and refinish. If it weren't for the mold I'd leave it alone.
Any suggestions or experience with this would be greatly appreciated. And yes I've dried it out but this is 42 years of build up with the last 20+ berthed in the PNW.
Thanks for your help.

Hi, Faith. I’ve had the slider hatches off a number of Cal 25s (they usually do that by themselves). I did find out where to get slider track and how to put the hatch back together and install (a mission of several years). I do not know if there are similarities between the 25 and the 34. A 29 might be closer. I couldn’t find any photos on the web that concentrated on the hatch. I’ll try to find a Cal 29 in town that I can look at (very few 34s around here).

Hi Charlie,
Thanks for the response. I am hoping this will not be a project of
several years . The slider tracks on the outside of what I'm calling the
"running boards" are even more elusive than the running boards. I got to
the boards by taking off the trim around the inside of the hatch opening
and painstakingly unscrewing the flathead screws under the headliner
which allowed me to loosen them up.
Today I will find out if my theory of pushing the whole thing aft will
work. Then, of course, comes the trick of how to put it all back
together.
Any input is greatly appreciated!

Hi Faith, I recently too the hatch cover off our Cal 29 to refinish the teak rails. In my situation,if you take off one rail, or track, the lip on the sides of the hatch that fit into the rails, will slip out of the rail that's still attached and the hatch comes right off.

Hi Ken,
Thanks for the input. Unfortunately the teak rails are actually much
harder to get out than the running boards.
Good news is I got them all out after unscrewing under the headliner and
then prying with a flat head screwdriver to loosen the goop. Once the 2
sides were out the back one came out by sliding the hatch aft. Its a
good thing ultimately as the running boards also have mold that needs to
be sanded and then varnishes once I get it out.
Painted the hatch with interlux today, (after lots of sanding
yesterday), and she looks brand new.
Here's hoping she goes back together without too much complexity!
Happy sailing,
Faith
