Cal 33-2 Cushion Foam Hardness

dh… [at] gmail.com2017-06-05 16:03 UTC
I have to assume that a previous owner of my boat, a 1987, replaced all the factory foam in the v-berth, salon seats/bunks, and aft berth with something that I would describe as "torturously hard". First night on the boat was miserable. Neither my wife or I have back problems (yet) or are sensitive to this kind of thing. But new foam is on order because the situation as it is is not tolerable. I'm just curious. Any other Cal 33-2 owners experience anything like this? Or do you find the factory cushions comfy for sleeping? For comparison we previously had a stock 1985 S2 27 in which we both slept extremely comfortably. -Doug

We have always used the "egg crate" mattress covers. Add a bit of comfort over the stock cushions. Doug, I just replaced a setee cushion that was too soft. The foam company used a hard foam and wrapped it with a softer foam (about 1") as they normally do. This seems to be a good compromise with good but softer support, like a pillow top mattress. You could look into adding soft softer layer above the existing foam. I had a Tuffted Topper made for the V berth on my Cal 31, which improved the situation tremendously. Also, they can make custom sheets to fit. Sounds like a common problem. The tufted topper looks nice. We’ll be cutting our own from topper foam blanks. My wife sews so custom fitting sheets will be added soon by her. Thanks. Not to sound like I’m complaining (much) because we really love the boat. But S2 seems to have done the cushions properly right at the factory. Fortunately it’s not a complex nor expensive “fix” for the Cal 33-2. -Doug > On Jun 5, 2017, at 1:08 PM, 'Harleigh Ewell' ha… [at] gmail.com [Cal_Boats] <Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com> wrote: > > > I had a Tuffted Topper made for the V berth on my Cal 31, which improved the situation tremendously. We were given a custom 1" foam pad from a sister ship in the marina. It fit perfect. The problem was they covered it with Naugahyde, made it harder than the standard cushions. We had a set of waterbed sheets from our home. Great sheets, queen sized, the nice thing about them was the top sheet was sewn to the fitted sheet at the foot. It was easy to tuck the extra sides under the bottom, and the queen sized fitted was perfect size for the head end. When these wear out, we will just sew another set together, easy peasy (I hope) John Raxter Cal 33 Oriental NC On Jun 5, 2017, at 6:08 PM, Doug Hoffman dh… [at] gmail.com [Cal_Boats] <Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com> wrote: Sounds like a common problem. We slept aboard every week from 1986 to 1988 and then lived aboard for two years from 1988 to 2000, and stayed aboard at least once a month in Florida and I recently stayed the night on the factory foam. Ours was 4 inch foam originally. But I have never had a problem sleeping nor did my children when we lived aboard. Perhaps ours was ordered with different than stock cushions?? It is a 1986 model manufactured in 1985 and was in stock at the dealership when we bought the boat. I have problems sleeping in a sleeping bag when camping without an air mattress so I am not insensitive to hard surfaces. Always we have loved the soft motion of sleeping on a boat… Don Dutton 1986 Cal 33-2, “Quantum Evolution” > On Jun 5, 2017, at 3:43 PM, Jraxter jr… [at] triad.rr.com [Cal_Boats] <Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com> wrote: > > > We were given a custom 1" foam pad from a sister ship in the marina. We just replaced all the cushions on our 1980 Cal 39 Mk2. Old ones were original, and way too soft. Replacements were made from two layers, the bottom layer of 4.5" Polyurethane foam (sourced from Bobs Foam Factory in Fremont Cal). Medium stiffness (Q32 in the salon, Q28 in V-Birth). The top layer on all was 2" memory foam (sourced from Bed Bath & Beyond, mattress topper). Bob's cut all to spec and bonded memory foam to poly foam then wrapped whole mess w/ 1" batting. very comfy. the softer poly foam in the v-birth makes for a nicer sleeping surface.
