Paint for bilge and inside hull
Mike's Yahoo2017-06-07 02:11 UTC
I was hoping for suggestions on what type of paint to use for the bilge (where the paint is gone) and the exposed inside hull areas (beneath v berth and salon cubbies). I looked in less venerable boating forums, and came away with no real answers. Any suggestions/lessons learned would be appreciated.
Best,

I have used Brightside for the interior of two boats and I was very happy.
I do not know about painting the bilge.

I was somewhat clueless when I began demo on Camlin and the information out there was all over the place. Luckily, Jamestown Distributors had just released their line of boat products, Total Boat, with simple names and not too many choices, if you know what I mean. I’ve taken out the head pan to replace the dreaded beam (Cal 29) and used TotalBilge <https://www.jamestowndistributors.com/userportal/show_product.do?pid=97747&familyName=TotalBoat+TotalBilge+Epoxy+Bilge+Paint> on both the hull and the back side of the replacement beam. I used their penetrating epoxy on the beam first.
This is not an endorsement for Total Boat. It’s only been a year since the application and who knows, but it was nice at the time to trust Jamestown that they wouldn’t put out a funky product. We’ll see how it holds up. Btw, still somewhat clueless but using the Force to my advantage. : )

A friend used Total Boat primer and paint on his topsides. Huge mistake.
The primer is unsandable and the result was terrible. Might be perfect for
a bilge though. It dried very quickly so you could put multiple coats on
in a day. The primer was difficult to sand with 100 grit. I am used to
primer that is full of microballoons that I sand easily with 220.

On the Cal 20's interior, I have used Pettit's interior paint, which I
had tinted at Ace Hardware to match the original color exactly. It used
to be called Dura-White but they changed the name. Look for their
interior paint. They touted it as adhering without surface preparation
to any clean surface. It's also resistant to mildew. It's a semi-gloss
or maybe eggshell. It has been durable in the Cal 20 after several
years. My theory in using this instead of housepaint or the other
options was that I wanted it done right once and I liked Pettit's other
products.

Hey i used Blige coat ..on one
Boat..(trawler) in engine bays.
Disappointed because not as
Shiny as the rustolim clean metal
Goss white..painted 10
Years ago..interlux..still shiny
Bilge coat greyed or yellow ed
Hard to clean (has tooth)
No Gloss..now only use
Rustolium...
Heres there 1800 4814785
They also have spray paint
In aireosal. Cans ..
Which is nice for corners
And bolts nut s. to seal out
Marine inverment ..
Spay hard to reach areas 1st
Then rollout easy spots
With foam cabinet gloss
Roller..this paint is fisf oil
Based they have epoxy gloss
Which has UV..PROTECTION
HOWEVER most Blige s
Have no need for UV.
