Volvo Penta MS Transmission Problem

John and Julie Stacklyn2017-06-17 14:34 UTC
Hello All, After a sail last weekend, motoring in my home channel and all of a sudden the engine just stops. Not a slow, sputtering kind but a quick dramatic one. Assume the transmission, as the shifter slides back and forth but does nothing and moving it manually at the gear does nothing either. Oil in the drain pan and a large, rubber seal around the shaft, completely undamaged, but the only way it could get there was from the back of the transmission. Pulled the dipstick and it is bone dry. It's an Volvo MS or MSB (can't remember which) that was a rebuild from Joe DeMers about 9 years ago. Any ideas, especially from Joe would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, John Stacklyn Sol Survivor Cal 31 #33

Hi John - Is the transmission the problem, or the engine? The old Volvo MS & MSB gears are now very old, obsolete, and getting much harder to find. We can rebuild yours, if it is not extensively damaged. Of course, running it out of oil is a disaster for any transmission. The permanent solution is to install a modern engine with a modern transmission.
