Re: [Cal_Boats] CG Inspection
So sorry for your loss. Too young.

>Chris, you just never know. Since I fell in the tub last December 12th I have been a lot more careful about holding on to something firm. Older and wiser. Last month we lost our immediate past commodore. He was on a tall ladder at our club touching up some paint for Opening Day the next day. For some reason he got on the roof, lost his footing and fell to the pavement 20 feet below. Died in the ER. He was only 62. You never know.David CAL29 411

This is one of the tasks they have been given, at least here in Chicago, and since you didn't ask I'll tell you, we have the largest municipal harbor system in the nation, over 9000 slips. And since the leader of the team is a friend of mine how could I decline? Passed with flying colors, had all the right stuff, answered the questions correctly. I just replaced some of my safety gear this spring, re-armed my inflatables, not cheap, also have standard life vests. It's nice to know that you have the right stuff. Learned that in my racing days, racing standards are tougher than the legal requirements. Boat I raced on had a rule, after dark everyone on deck wears a PFD and is clipped on to the jacklines. never lost anybody. Or if the skipper/watch said to put on PFDs, no arguments, anytime. That boat has lots of silver. David CAL29 411

I also bought a $1 rubber mallet from the cheap-tool table at the hardware store to tap the fire extinguishers and keep the powder loose. As a practical matter, the boat rarely ventures more than 25 miles from a USCG station and (sadly) doesn't do much night sailing any more (nobody wants to go out, which puzzles me). The most important practice is to maintain the boat in a seaworthy condition so the water stays out of the hull, the rig stays up, and the rudder steers the boat.

We old folks know how close to disaster we have come, or we have seen others encounter it. It makes us more cautious. Just by way of gruesome example, I used to go aloft on the schooner without any safety gear. It seemed a bit timid and unmanly. But then a young crew member on the commercial schooner fell in spring fit-out. She was lucky: the shrink wrap was still in place and it broker her fall. She lived, but broke almost every bone in her body. That impressed me and I started wearing the OSHA climbing harness and tether.

I immediately sought the anchor but it wasn't shackled to the rode. Hoisting the mainsail was going to take too long, as I discovered after unfurling it. I finally used the boat's drift speed to steer around a prominent range light pole into deeper water and only then did I discover why the outboard had stopped: it was out of gas. Guess who checks the fuel before each sail now?
