$10,000 difference in price is a big gap. i like the yanmar but not 10k worth. talk to a surveyor. he might be able to suggest a better alternative based on your needs and budget. john b s/v 1983 catalina 27 On Wednesday, August 2, 2017, 11:17:33 PM CDT, Gerald Sobel so… [at] yahoo.com [Cal_Boats] <Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com> wrote: I'm about to look at a couple of boats. I have owned my 1969 Cal 34, Soufflé, for almost 20 years. She is a GREAT boat, taking up so much of my money and time that my wife refers to her, not always jokingly, as the other woman, though on good days she feels almost as affectionately towards the old girl as I do. Most of my sailing is cruising out of Portland, Oregon on the Columbia river, often being out for days at a time with the wife. When the kids were small, we did some cruising up river through two dams, and several trips 100 miles downriver to Astoria; and another time in the San Juan Islands. I have also taken Soufflé up the coast to Victoria, BC a number of times, and in all kinds of weather, including some relatively serious winds and seas. In recent years I replaced the old but reliable Atomic 4 with a Beta Marine 20 (got tired of gas engine issues and lack of motoring range), and then redid the decks with new gelcoat and Duraback non-skid and properly rebedding deck fittings. Lesser but important improvements over the years include electronics, a better electrical system, better lights, sails, ground tackle, etc. Bottom line: the Cal 34 is a great boat, and mine was a great boat before I started to really pour resources into her. I have also had a some experience in a Cascade 36, which were built right here in River City. The boat I sailed in many years ago was well raced (and is still raced) a lot here in Portland and has also done about 30 Oregon Offshore races, which run from Astoria to Victoria. Very sturdy boats. Many were sold not as complete boats but rather as kits in differing states of completion. Thus, some are in better shape and/or better rigged than others. But, assuming they were finished by the company, there are few sturdier for the money. And, they cut through the water quite well. If you are really considering long cruises, the Cascade might have more room for food, fuel and water than the Cal, but will cost more to fix up. Good luck. P. The Cascade seems way over priced. I paid not much more than that for my 1986 Cal 33-2, which is in excellent condition. Boats that old scare me. I start wondering about the rigging and such. The Yanmar in the Cascade looks nice. Wonder about its condition and hours. Paint makes anything appear nice. Not sure in your area, but in my area I think its a buyers market for boats. And it also depends on how much time you want to spend sailing and how much time fixing the boat. I choose to sail more, repair less, so want a boat in fairly good condition that just needs the typical maintenance. I'd keep looking for that perfect deal. Keep emotion out of the decision and as others said, get a survey from a reputable surveyor. It's worth the money. I walked away from one boat that I really wanted after the surveyor and I went over it thoroughly. Hi Jerry, I am right in the middle of planning an offshore adventure. Because I am not getting any younger, I began looking at boats that had been cruising or the owners were getting ready to go. I hoped to find someone whose dream had died for whatever reason. The cost of upgrading to offshore equipment is astronomical. You start thinking about serious ground tackle, navigation equipment, wind vane, replacing standing and running rigging, spares, and so on. My criteria were that I wanted a boat small enough for me to single hand, but large enough to have a couple of guests.. I also wanted a skeg protected rudder and cutter rigged for a staysail. I finally settled on a Wauquiez 35 that is almost prepared to go and am in the process of completing the purchase now. I guess my point is, there are a lot of boats out there and lots of options. Take a look at the following Cruising World article: http://www.cruisingworld.com/9-best-used-boats-for-2017 <http://www.cruisingworld.com/9-best-used-boats-for-2017> Good luck in you endeavor. Maybe I will see you in Tonga some day. Hey Jerry, She certainly is modified! I have a Cal 2 34 and I love her dearly. She's definitely a blue water cruiser and sails like a dream. You'll have an advantage with the atomic 4 as you'll actually be able to get parts for it. I've got an old Westerbeke, (that has been completely rebuilt for many more dollars than I paid for the boat), but other than that mine has been easy to work on and she takes good care of me. I say go with the Cal but, of course, I'm biased. Hey Jerry I‘m just back from 5 days in the Sound with Nemesis, the prettiest girl at the dance, in my opinion. This may strike you as odd, but I would run, not walk, from any “highly modified” boat offered by a guy who can’t spell “steel", and whose criteria of excellence was “plant of rom to sleep several girls.” Pay attention to what Terry has to say. His 2-29 is next to me at YC, and he’s a good thinker. The old saw about the free boat you are given may the the most expensive one you could ever buy. Somewhere out there is a great old boat that is worthy of your ownership. Find it!
