CAL 29 mast

Randy Alcorn2017-04-26 22:50 UTC
Hey all, Out Patients mast came down during a race in 35 knot winds. The boat was hit with a 35 knot gust at the same time we came off a 8 to 10 ft wave. The resulting impact overloaded the stays and the mast went to leeward. No one was hurt and we recovered the mast, sails and rigging. The cabin top and toe rail got pretty chewed up from all the swells. The mast ended up with an impact dent and bent. There was a mast for a CAL 29 that was for sale not long ago. Anybody remember it or how to contact anyone? RandyCAL 2 29Out PatientChannel Islands Ca

There was something I remember in a basic hang gliding manual about straightening wing tubing in a hang glider. Something about bending it back around a big tree. Might be a little difficult with a sailboat mast, tho. Sorry to hear about your mishap. What part of the rigging failed? I was the only one who raced yesterday with reefed main. I knew the winds were dicey and I didn't want to over tax the boat. It worked out OK, because when we rounded the detached breakwater and ran into gusty winds and steep sloppy waves hitting broadside, I was able to cut inside boats that were struggling with the conditions, and made up a lot of time because my boat was pretty much under control. Cal 29 mast

Ahoy all, Some may remember, Out Patient lost the mast in a Santa Barbra race last spring in heavy air and huge seas. I wanted Ballenger to build me a new mast, but he is so far behind, i found one in Detroit for a reasonable price. The hard part is getting it cross country. I posted on Uship, but no takers. I think I can borrow a 34 ft trailer and bring it back. Any other ideas? RandyCal 29Out Patient Channel Islands Ca

Randy, maybe you can ship it alongside another mast from a wickedly wealthy racer, who would think nothing of flying his boat around the country to attend regattas. Or, have it built in China, and bring it here by boat (or jet freighter?). When I bought my new battery, they thought nothing of flying it to me, lead and all, from half way around the world, for less than the cost of shipping jeans and a sweater from Boston by truck. Ok, both dumb ideas, but, you were asking for ideas and that's all I could think of.Ok. There are some nautical junkyards down here in the San Pedro, Long Beach, and Huntington Beach Area. Have you check all of them? What about Seals Spars in the Bay Area?Another idea: any way to tie a pair of small wheels a tail light, brake lights and red streamers to the end of the mast, hook the other end to your bumper, and bring it home that way? A thrity plus foot trailer just sounds like over kill. What about borrowing someone's MacGregor boat trailer? Now, that's an idea. Jerry of Shpritz. Randy, What about contacting several of the boat shippers and seeing if they would piggy back theist with another boat’s delivery? If you were a patient soul, you might be able to get it transported for a reasonable price. Nemesis came to Seattle in a similar fashion back in 1994 . The company had agreed to piggy back her with another boat at a great price if I were patient, which I was. after a month or so, they tired of waiting for the second boat, had a truck in the midwest facing a deadhead, and delivered Nemesis for the price we had agreed upon. Would it be feasible to put it on a “contractor rack” on top of a long wheelbase pickup? Best of luck!
