There was something I remember in a basic hang gliding manual about straightening wing tubing in a hang glider. Something about bending it back around a big tree. Might be a little difficult with a sailboat mast, tho. Sorry to hear about your mishap. What part of the rigging failed? I was the only one who raced yesterday with reefed main. I knew the winds were dicey and I didn't want to over tax the boat. It worked out OK, because when we rounded the detached breakwater and ran into gusty winds and steep sloppy waves hitting broadside, I was able to cut inside boats that were struggling with the conditions, and made up a lot of time because my boat was pretty much under control.

Hey all,
Out Patients mast came down during a race in 35 knot winds. The boat was hit with a 35 knot gust at the same time we came off a 8 to 10 ft wave. The resulting impact overloaded the stays and the mast went to leeward. No one was hurt and we recovered the mast, sails and rigging. The cabin top and toe rail got pretty chewed up from all the swells. The mast ended up with an impact dent and bent.
There was a mast for a CAL 29 that was for sale not long ago. Anybody remember it or how to contact anyone?

Thanks Fred,
I put it on u ship hoping I could piggy back something. I am not in hurry. I am driving across Thanksgiving, I can take a day and run up there. They keep texting me other things to buy, lol.
Now that I found a mast, I have lots of damage and repairs , if you can imagine 10 ft + seas and your boat rolling raill to rail as we secured sails and lines.
I tried to attach a picture of the damage, if you see it.

Randy,What about contacting several of the boat shippers and seeing if they would piggy back theist with another boat’s delivery? If you were a patient soul, you might be able to get it transported for a reasonable price. Nemesis came to Seattle in a similar fashion back in 1994 . The company had agreed to piggy back her with another boat at a great price if I were patient, which I was. after a month or so, they tired of waiting for the second boat, had a truck in the midwest facing a deadhead, and delivered Nemesis for the price we had agreed upon. Would it be feasible to put it on a “contractor rack” on top of a long wheelbase pickup?Best of luck!Fred Haas3-30 NemesisTacoma

Ok, both dumb ideas, but, you were asking for ideas and that's all I could think of.Ok. There are some nautical junkyards down here in the San Pedro, Long Beach, and Huntington Beach Area. Have you check all of them? What about Seals Spars in the Bay Area?Another idea: any way to tie a pair of small wheels a tail light, brake lights and red streamers to the end of the mast, hook the other end to your bumper, and bring it home that way? A thrity plus foot trailer just sounds like over kill. What about borrowing someone's MacGregor boat trailer? Now, that's an idea.

I love the mast Buzz built for Papoose. It did take 11 months to get it
though. But, I got it one week before the first race so I only lost the
season when I was dismasted and no option could have prevented that. But I
feel your pain. Good luck in picking up the new mast.

Randy,I wonder if you can cut the mast in half, then sleeve it and weld it back together once you get it home? Robin Le Grahm broke the mast on his Lapworth 24 twice, and had it fixed that way.
Can a common carrier just tie the mast on top of a trailer, and ship it to you that way? Uh. maybe not, cause it's likely the mast is going to need to be taken off one trailer and put on another to get from Dee Troit to Sta. Barb/Ventura, but maybe it's doable.
It would seem the cost of driving to and from Detroid dragging a trailer, including gas and motels, would be un-economic. But, maybe not.Another idea, can you fly out, rent a motor home, put the mast on the roof, and drive it one way to California? Here's another thought: buy a light weight, two wheel trailer in Detroit via Craigslist, weld a 2" X 21' steel pipe onto the tongue, a vertical tube with a saddle at the tongue high enough to clear the tailgate and cab, and drag the whole thing back, detach the tube etc. and sell the trailer on Craigslist. Justathought. Where there's a will, there's a way.
Lastly, maybe you can custom built the steel brackets to fit a double axle U Haul trailer, back, front and tongue, throw them in the back of your truck, bolt them on the same model trailer when you get to Detroit, and haul the mast home, and turn in the trailer locally. U-Haul trailer rental is relatively cheap, won't have to look for, buy, or sell trailer you don't want, etc.
