Cal listers and the future
Helen Horn2017-09-19 19:53 UTC
While reading our latest theme, which got so long I decided to start over with this sudden awareness; it is clear that many of us, including myself, are over 70. (AND still very active and sailing). Our lifestyles connected to sailing may have contributed, as well as the positive attitudes we have ( we ARE going sailing today and it's going to be great, for example). And you northerners put your boats away for the winter knowing you're going to splash them again asap.
Question: I'd love to know the range of ages of our listers if you wish to share. I'm 73, Edward's almost 65. Thought: I know we're bringing in New listers. We see many "wake up" when buying new boats or fixing up their oldies. As the supply of Cals dwindles (not soon as they are good, tough, and affordable), I would like to encourage members to ask questions of the group, don't think your question isn't important. Even if we have heard it before, someone in this "think tank" may have a new and improved answer. Lastly, when and if you can get "young-uns" on your boat, Put them on the tiller; hook em!

I am astonished to find that I am 70. As I was walking down the
driveway after my concrete-hauling undertaking last weekend, I pondered
that number. 70! Wow, I don't feel like 70. Long ago I read an
article suggesting that most older adults have a mental image of
themselves being about 35. That's about right--old enough to have some
experience and knowledge, but not so old as to be impaired and infirm.
But who's that old guy who looks out from my bathroom mirror when I
shave in the morning? So I'm walking down the sidewalk feeling 35 and
everybody else sees an old guy. Pretty strange. And then there's a
wonderful '80s movie, /Meet Mr. Black/, with Anthony Hopkins. He plays
an older, very wealthy executive. He's about to turn 60 and have a huge
bash, but Death shows up to take him away. He negotiates an extension.
There's a scene at the huge party with fireworks where he gives a
speech. "60 years, don't they pass in a blink!" Absolutely. So I'm
fully aware of how very lucky I am to be old and functional, and how
much I should appreciate being able to do all those things I like to do.

Chris, I'm 70 as well. Well, at least for almost two more months, anyway. 70 and holding. I don't think I need to get any older than this. But what is the alternative? I've been going down to the Santa Monica college pool, it's a full on modern Olympic facility, 50 meters by 25 yards, and swimming about a mile as fast as I can go without totally exhausting myself, alternating backstroke and freestyle. The backstroke allows me to catch my breath. I've lost the stubborn 20 lbs that dieting wouldn't touch-not that I tried dieting in earnest, but this is an easier way to lose weight than dieting, tho it takes hard work. And at the end of the work-out I wonder why our ancestors climbed out onto land as I stagger about the deck dizzily, but the endorphins kick in and I feel great. Those muscles want to have fun, too. I can see why the vast majority of the boats on our docks, who rarely see their owners, and even more rarely, if ever, leave their docks, look so sadly.Jerry of Shpritz.

Great question Helen. I am almost 67 and headed out on an adventure sailing down your way and eventually to México.
We sailed our local “beer can” series here in Tacoma all summer and we almost always had someone on the boat who had never sailed before. I would tell them that there was a danger that they might like it. We would always put them on the helm after the race to sail home. One of the very fun things we do is to share this sport with others and at this point they are almost always younger than me.
I do think that this sport keeps us active and thinking. Today, Fred Haas and I were problem solving a fresh water system leak on my new boat. One of the things I like about sailing is that despite having sailed seriously since the age of 12, I learn new things or get better at something every time I go out. Keeps the mind young.

I just finished my 58th year a couple of weeks back, and sadly looking to the haul out date for Arcturus on the calendar - the 1976 Cal 2-27 has been ours now for 18 seasons. Like Chris in Traverse City, I moved a bumper block this year (only one - it was in the way during spring commissioning). Google told me how heavy it was after the fact, but levers and pipes made easy work of it.
The sailing season is brief in Michigan. Every day gets shorter, every daysail is sweet, and feels like something you stole from Old Man Winter.Still well enough to bike a thousand miles a year (down from two thousand when I commuted to work) and able to ride my age or longer on my birthday. I stay active, and so does my boat. Nevertheless, I know how quickly things can change - from bicycling one minute to neurointensive care a few hours later (it was unrelated to the bike).
I value this far-flung community of Cal sailors. The problems we face and overcome. The hopes and dreams that people share. The photos we post. The off-topic posts that give depth to each sailor. The shared grieving when it's time to move on.
Let's grow older together.

I have the oldest boat on the list but apparently I am not the oldest
sailor. I will be 70 next month. Hawoleen. I have a crew of 8. Rarely more
than 5 make a race. The average age of the crew is right at my age and
ranges plus minus 10 years. Young on Papoose is not on Medicare. Our racing
season is 16 races. We had the awards ceremony Saturday. They announced
that our average score across all three series was 1.3 points. The only
comment I got from me fellow club members was don't come back next year. I
win because I seriously out point most of the boats in our club. I wrote an
article on L-36.com on how to point higher. You can read it if you want.
One of the suggestions is to work out and stay fit because pointing high is
physically hard.
All this said, one of the beauties of this sport is you can do it for a
lifetime and be competitive. Name another spot where you can do that. Maybe
curling?

Thanks for the response, a very warm and sharing group of people, you all bring so much to the table, and one-of-a-kind experiences, awesome! If we put us on a map we are spread out all over the US and some cruising beyond. This brings me to thinking of some who are cruising, and hoping for the best; Tom going to Florida, Reggie and Barbara on their summer adventures.

I‘ll be 71 next month, and have been taking care of Nemesis since 1994. As Terry mentioned, he and I will sail from Tacoma tomorrow to be in San Francisco in a week or so. TYC recently recognized me as the Most off the Dock sailor in our group. I have 60 days so far this year, and am shooting for 70 aboard Nemesis. The time on Altere will be icing on the cake.

I agree with Jerry and Harold about exercise and with Terry about the
continued mental challenges of sailing that keep it interesting. I
commute to work on the bike (a lot shorter ride than Harold's but it's
year round and in northern lower MI, so that counts) and for around-town
travel and have a daily after-work extended walking route. Work also
keeps the brain functioning (not sure about the retirement concept).
But it's important to realize that there is a big component of good luck
in being able to do those things. There's luck in terms of medical
history, accident avoidance, good genetic inheritance, and all that.
Not everybody hits the jackpot in that regard. I have a friend a decade
older who's reached a point where he has to sell his C&C 41--too much
boat, not enough physical resources left to manage it. My plan is to
emulate Olin Stephens and be sailing when I'm 100.
One of the Beatles said that real life is what happens when you're
making other plans, so I'm hoping I stay lucky.

Greetings from the PNW,
I agree our lifestyles and attitudes keep us sharp, healthy and active.
I turned 62 on the eclipse, bought my Cal 2 34 at age 59 as my first
boat and am grateful to this list for all that it teaches me everyday. I
am doing, basically, a complete refit on her on a nonexistent budget.
My father was an avid sailor on the East Coast so I was fortunate to
grow up infused with the love of all aspects of everything to do with
sailing. He built a sunfish in our basement when I was very young and to
this day I can't remember how he got it out of there. I do remember that
he won many races with it. Eventually he designed and had built a custom
55' yacht, teak decks and the whole 9 yards in England. He died
windsurfing off the back of that yacht off the coast of Turkey. Way to
go Dad! He was only 55 years old but he died happy.
I am grateful for the advice, suggestions, creative problem solving and
direction on all aspects of Cals and sailing that you all give me. I
appreciate that all questions are welcomed and addressed from a place of
experience and thinking inside and outside the box.
Thanks Cal forum and I look forward to continuing to hone my knowledge,
skills and love of the adventure that it is to enjoy the privilege of
having my Cal.

Our lifestyles connected to sailing may have contributed, as well as the positive attitudes we have ( we ARE going sailing today and it's going to be great, for example). And you northerners put your boats away for the winter knowing you're going to splash them again asap.

As the supply of Cals dwindles (not soon as they are good, tough, and affordable), I would like to encourage members to ask questions of the group, don't think your question isn't important. Even if we have heard it before, someone in this "think tank" may have a new and improved answer.
