Hand rails Cal 2/30

Has anyone had experience with replacing the cabin top hand rails on a CAL 2/30?

Hi,
I just redid the grab rails on the starboard side of my Cal 2 34. The
previous owner had taken them off to varnish etc and was planning to do
some deck work and then I bought the boat.
Did you have specific questions about it? I would guess it would be the
same process for all the Cals.

I have a Cal 30 (original model). In order to get the handrails off I had to slide one of those vibrating tools in between the wood and the deck, because the handrails were originally screwed into the deck before the hull and deck were joined. A couple of screws lined up perfectly so that they were right where the bulkheads were located.
If I have to do it again, I will replace them with stainless. They are a pain to keep maintained (teak oiled).
Just make sure to put some marine silicone in the holes when you put them back. I used "dress up" washers instead of trying to hide the screw holes on the inside.

Hi Brian,
Thanks for the info. Mine were already off when I got the boat and the
previous owner did a beautiful job of refinishing them. I got new
stainless screws when I put them back on and they wouldn't screw down
flush. So I took them off again, found the old screws, (not phillips
head), and put them back on with life boat caulk not in the holes but on
the deck and the flat part of the grab rails. Now I'm having leaking
issues on the starboard side where the short, (3 hole) grab rail is.
Gonna put some more life boat caulk around where it joins to the deck
and see if that takes care of it. If not I guess the next step will be
take the headliner off and see what's going on under there.....never a
dull moment with the boat.

Rebed with butyl as per these instructions (note that the place to buy the correct butyl is shown as well) and it will *never* leak again. http://www.pbase.com/mainecruising/rebedding_hardware&page=2

I did rebed with butyl the first time around and that's why I couldn't
get them to sit flush. The new screws were exactly the same size but
wouldn't sit in all the way. Sooo frustrating! Can't put the butyl in
the screw hole cuz it gets hung up around the screw hence the not
sitting in all the way.
I am a huge fan of butyl tape but it doesn't work so well if you can't
get to the other side of what you're bedding to put the pressure on it
that it needs to sit down tightly. Perhaps I'm missing something with
this.........

1) make sure your butyl comes from the source in the link
2) chamfer the holes as shown in the link
3) if necessary, buy screws 1/8” or whatever longer
The butyl doesn’t really go “in” the screw hole to form a seal although no problem if it does. Rather it forms a gasket, a gasket that tightly encircles the thru-deck bolt. I had no problems but it sounds like your original screws were just barely long enough and/or you had the wrong kind of butyl. I had such great luck with butyl (ease of installation, seals up the most stubborn leak) that I now use it for all through deck hardware bedding. Chainplates, cleats, tracks, handrails, hatches, whatever).

Ok, I'll check out the link as maybe the issue is the wrong kind of
butyl. I did reuse the butyl I have to rebed the hardware for the salon
hatch when I took that off to scrape and repaint and it worked great!
That's why I'm so stumped.

So I took them off again, found the old screws, (not phillips head), and put them back on with life boat caulk not in the holes but on the deck and the flat part of the grab rails. Now I'm having leaking issues on the starboard side where the short, (3 hole) grab rail is. Gonna put some more life boat caulk around where it joins to the deck and see if that takes care of it. If not I guess the next step will be take the headliner off and see what's going on under there.....never a dull moment with the boat.

In order to get the handrails off I had to slide one of those vibrating tools in between the wood and the deck, because the handrails were originally screwed into the deck before the hull and deck were joined. A couple of screws lined up perfectly so that they were right where the bulkheads were located.
