My friend with the other Cal 20 in town is looking to sell. The boat is in the water right now but has a good trailer and a relatively new OB motor. Located in Traverse City, MI. Chris Campbell P.S. My boat has her mast up as of last night. Tonight perhaps I can finish rigging and get a short sail in, if it doesn't rain or drop below 50° F.

Chris, how is your water temp? In the spring in the Chesapeake, the air temp drops about 10 degrees when one gets on the water. There's a good local science/sailing program with their own steel schooner, but they also charter the local tourist schooner in the spring, before the tourons arrive. That's the one I teach on--about a mile and a half from my house, plus a larger teaching platform. I was doing fish in the morning and benthos--bottom critters--in the p.m. Both are outdoors, on deck, exposed. It was cold! Windy, cloudy, damp & dismal. One of the things that all students do is weather observations. We were getting surface water temps of 43-45° F., depending on which thermometer and which eyes. Air temps were upper 40s. By noon I was ready to cancel the evening's mast-stepping engagement. All I wanted to do was go home and stand in a warm shower. I had 6 layers on top and 2-3 on bottom, including foulies. This is the end of May, for goodness' sake. The wind dropped and the sun came out in the p.m. and mutinous thoughts disappeared, mostly. We stepped two Cal 20 masts in the marina, where the temps were probably above 50°. When we train new crew for our historic schooner replica, we advise that the coldest they will ever be is in the middle of Lake Michigan in the middle of the summer at 3:00 a.m. I can vouch for it. Chris, You have it. I have sailed the Chgo-Mac, and the Tri-State, and I was never colder in my life. At 2am in the middle of Lake Michigan it is COLD. Middle of the summer, but that lake has it's own rules.Bring warm stuff. Listmates: Another one of the area's Cal 20s is for sale. Kevin Sauvage, a good sailor and craftsman, has renovated "Little Emma" and now has her for sale, because he's re-doing another Cal 20. The boat is in northwestern lower Michigan. He said: > My Cal 20, Little Emma had a very good racing season taking Boat of > the year for our little yacht club. She is very quick for her rating. > Little Emma will be for sale if you know of anyone wanting a good > boat, motor and trailer for $3,200. I think this is the boat that he trailered to Florida and sailed to the Bahamas last winter. Kevin is trustworthy and his work is first-rate. When I was driving up to look at the Cal 20 I bought, I ran into Kevin at a wooden boat show and mentioned I was thinking about buying the Cal 20. He said "buy it." Best advice I ever got.
