Cal 33.2 sail size

matthew2017-10-17 17:51 UTC
Does anyone know the main and jib actual sail size on the Cal 33.2? Im not near my boat to measure. I have a guy that has hundreds of used sails. Im also considering getting a sewing machine and making them from a pre cut kit from sailrite. However, There're fabric is only 6.4 oz vs 8 oz from Doyle.Matthew

Oh, that link I sent, if you click on the 'KEY' you get how the dimensions are derived and you can then transfer the numbers from the table. http://sailboatdata.com/rig_diagram.htm http://sailboatdata.com/viewrecord.asp?class_id=1960 Leslie Puffin Cal 33-2 On Tue, Oct 17, 2017 at 2:07 PM, Donald C Dutton dn… [at] comcast.net [Cal_Boats] <Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com> wrote: > > > Matthew, > > Cal 33-2 Rig Dimensions: > I 46’ 0” > J 13’ 3” > P 40’ 6” > E 12’ 3” > > Mainsail Area: 248.1 sq. ft. > 100% Foretriangle: 304.8 sq. ft. > > Mast Height above DWL: 50’ 3” > > Hope that helps! > > Don Dutton > 1986 Cal 33-2, “Quantum Evolution” > > > On Oct 17, 2017, at 10:51 AM, matthew ma… [at] yahoo.com [Cal_Boats] < > Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com> wrote: > > > Does anyone know the main and jib actual sail size on the Cal 33.2? Our cal 33 came with a main from a Catalina 34 tall rig. About 6" short on the boom and pendants added to reef points. Otherwise it works great! We had a nice new full batten main made for Puffin by Ullman Sails in Deltaville VA two winters ago. They came to the boat, measured and had it ready in the Spring. I highly recommend them. They have a special discount if you order a sail during the winter. I would have emailed the group and given my old sail away for shipping cost, but it was so worn out it would tear if you looked at it sideways. I removed all the cars and threw the sail away. No, an optical illusion. There were some rolling waves and I happen to be down in one when my friend on neighbor boat PEQUOD snapped the pic. DeAnne was using her zoom lens and it was very high resolution. I cropped the picture to focus on Puffin. There is a second shot showing us coming up from behind the wave. We were sailing together on a 9 day vacation this past June. Puffin and Pequod sailing the Southern Bay. Matthew, If you are shopping sewing machines, consider the LSZ-1 along with the Monster II Balance Wheel and Ultrafeed Industrial Sewing Table & Workhorse Servo Motor. Great control and amazing power (this thing would sew through steel plates!). I replaced the sacrificial sun cover on our 35 MKII this spring. It powered through half a dozen layers of Dacron, two layers of Sunbrella and webbing like a hot knife through butter. Also make a sail pack. I’m certain those two projects alone justified the cost (at least that is what I’m telling myself). Matthew, That machine is identical to my Sailrite machine that I bought about 12 years ago and the one that Steve recommended. Great machines. Note that you can get many accessories from Sailrite as well as support. I too paid for the machine with all the DIY projects I did in the first couple of years I owned the machine. I never made a sail and think that it would be more difficult, but not impossible, without a machine with a longer arm. Good luck. Hi Matthew, The LSZ-1 has zig-zag. What I don’t see on the Reliable machine is stitch length adjustment. Steve, That is a nice feature. Looks like it is a salivate add-on that screws in where the other plate was on my older model. I have feature envy and am going to check Sailrite to see if my older model could be modified. Hi Charlie, The table has a ¾ horsepower motor with about 4:1 reduction. I’d be afraid it would pull the steering pedestal from the cockpit floor. BTW-enjoyed the frostbiting photos. I own a TACSEW industrial walking foot sewing machine. It only does straight stitch. I found that sail work other than sewing on the UV shield I should leave to the sail maker. I have made biminis, dodgers, sail covers and winch covers for all my boats over the years, as well as recovered car and truck seats and the like. Machine has well paid for itself. I learned the basics as a kid from my Mom, who had a re-upholstery business. There are two types of walking foot machines....needle fed and presser foot fed. I have always liked the needle fed, where the needle walks and pulls the fabric through. The presser foot feed uses the presser foot to walk and pull the fabric, and the needle does not walk. Advantages and disadvantages to both types. Needle fed guarantees a uniform stitch. Mine machine sits on a table, has the big motor, is belt driven and very heavy duty. There is a foot pedal to control the sewing speed and it is clutch driven. No worries of it getting out of control. I have looked at the machines sold by sailrite. They are the presser foot feed type, portable and also do zig-zag. Only downside is they are small and not much room in the sewing head to bunch fabric as you sew. I have used my Tacsew for over 20 years and not needed zig-zag. Leslie, Why do you feel you should leave the sail work to the sail maker? Maybe I shouldn't take it on as my first sewing project after I get a machine. Is it due to not having a zig zag machine? I know most of my current jib is done with it. From my understanding a sail kit can be ordered from sailrite and all of the panels are pre cut and labeled. All one has to do is connect them basically, And also taking full learning advantage from all of their videos as well.Matthew From: "NEWMAN d2… [at] gmail.com [Cal_Boats]" <Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com> To: Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com; matthew <ma… [at] yahoo.com> Cc: "Urbanski, Steven J." <st… [at] ul.com> Sent: Friday, October 20, 2017 10:40 AM Subject: Re: [Cal_Boats] Cal 33.2 sail size I own a TACSEW industrial walking foot sewing machine. Some things I leave to the experts. A sail is large. Lots of material to work with. Stitching needs to be very good to hold up to the stress that the sail will encounter. Sail makers are setup to sew sails. Very large sewing machines recessed in the floor so they can slide the sail through the machine easily. We had a sail made for our Cal 33-2 last winter. They went to our boat, measured, made sure it was a perfect fit. Full batten sail complete with new trucks and associated hardware. $2600. If you factor how many years the sail will last and how much enjoyment it will provide, that isn't a lot of money. All I had to do was install onto my boat, which I do every Spring anyway. I have enough years and life lessons now to know when to take on a job or to pass it on to the experts. I do enough myself that every so often it is good to let someone else do it. I was going to say the same thing, although I acknowledge that sometimes we have a choice between doing things ourselves and not doing them at all. Better to DIY than just sit at home. On my other boat, the current mainsail was purchased around 1970. I was sailing with it 3 days ago and almost had 2nd thoughts about the new sail I have ordered--the old one looked pretty good. But 1970 is 47 years back, and that's pretty good service. A professional's competent work can last a long time. My Cal 20's main, the one one that came with it, was looking sad, so I bought a used one through somebody on this list. It had a better shape than the one I already had, but now it's getting a bit sad too. That was at least 12 years ago. Time to hunt for another one. Chris Campbell

Chris, I am right there with you. I am a DIY guy. Replaced the whole cabin sole in Puffin. But wood working I have the tools and experience to do. Sails I can't justify the zigzag machine for the job and plus just don't want to spend my time that way. I already have my straight stitch walking foot machine so I just do the simpler jobs like biminis and wheel covers. And after getting the sail from Ulman sails, we'll it is a work of art.
