So Cal Temporary Moorage
Terry Spencer2017-10-24 00:51 UTC
So I have to admit that Jerry’s stories about So Cal marinas have me scared. I am about to head for Southern California from the Bay Area in my new cruising boat (not a Cal) and want to tie the boat up for about two months while I fly back to the Northwest for the holidays. Later, I am headed for México.
Do any of you So Cal Cal sailors (sounds redundant) have any advice on the best places to tie up for that length of time? I would prefer San Diego because of a link to a rigger. But I also want to find a place that would be easy to ready and provision the boat for the leg down to Baja.
Any and all advice is welcomed.
Thanks in advance,
Terry Spencer

There are slips available in Wilmington. It's the most inexpensive place (exactly the place and reason for building Marina del Rey, to get recreational boating out from under the bows of commercial shipping, ha ha ha). It's not a pretty area, tho. There I think also slips in Long Beach, in a big Marina near the Queen Mary. Now, that's a pretty area. The Shorline YC there sponsors the Trans-pac Race. Nice club. You can try MdR but with all the construction going on at the same time, it's hard to find a slip, but try anyhow.Jerry

Try San Pedro or Wilmington. Marina del Rey is a nightmare right now. In the San Diego area, Chula Vista might be viable.

Terry, do you belong to a yacht club that might have reciprocity with clubs in Long Beach or San Diego? It would provide an excuse to make some phone calls.
In San Diego, I would concentrate on the Shelter Island area. That is quite close to West Marine, food stores, and numerous boat yards. I know a guy who was in the boat yard biz in San Diego. He has since moved to Oregon, but I could contact him about former San Diego connections. I also know some sailors in Long Beach area (a little south in the area of the Long Beach Yacht Club - Alamitos Bay area). That area also has nearby West Marine and shopping.
Best of Luck

Terry,
Where in Emeryville? My boat is at Emery Cove, B-58.
You will find the slip rate at Emery Cove is half that for Shelter
Island, San Diego.
Down here ( I live in La Jolla), Chula Vista and Mission Bay / Quivera
Basin have the most reasonably priced marinas.
I can also recommend Pacific Offshore rigging, near shelter Island.

Duane

Hi Duane,
I am at Emery Cove Yacht Harbor, D13. Sounds like it would be worth shopping around and checking out the Chula Vista area. I will do so. i expect to leave here in about a week and a half to head south.

Thanks to everyone for their advice on moorage in SoCal. I am looking forward to visiting the area. Again for this trip I am not traveling on a Cal but if anyone from this list wishes to follow along I written a few blog entries so far about it. They are at:
