Hi, All. We've had a lot of new people sign up lately. Some are new owners
and some are interested in getting a CAL. I encourage our newbies to hop
into the fray with their questions and comments. Downright civil and
informative group here.

Hi, All. As your humble group moderator (and even humbler Cal 25 owner), I
just want to note that we have picked up two Cal 2-46s as group members in
recent days. The 46s are/were boats owned by the likes of Lapworth, Jensen,
and Vandiver. Looks like our group is moving into the upper crust of
Groupdom. :- ]

Very nice you can save the heritage. Still race on a cal 25 Tuesday nights in marina Del Rey. Even with the #2 we do very well

On a tangential note, the latest issue of /Good Old Boat/ magazine had
an editorial piece (think that's where it was) about how in the last
century, when we and our boats were made, the designers of the vessels
were names--Bill Lapworth, Olin Stephens, Phil Rhodes, Carl Alberg,
Bill Luders, Bill Crealock, Bob Perry, the elder Bill Tripp, a bunch of
others. Now they're not so well known, maybe because the designs tend
to be team efforts. Me, I'm happy to know that my boats are from
Lapworth and Tripp and to recognize their sister vessels. The same issue
of /GOB /had a classified ad for a Mercer 44, a Tripp design that still
can take my breath away. There was one in my home port when I worked
summers at a sailboat place and it really was my idea of how a yacht
should look. My other boat is basically a Tripp Bermuda 40 with the
photocopier set on 65%.
It's nice when there are personalities involved. Those architects
tended to have signature ideas. I'm a classical music listener and most
of the good composers have rhythmic and harmonic signatures that
identify them after you're heard 4 or 6 measures. Anonymity isn't good
in design or composing or most other endeavors. I filled out a
post-season survey for the schoolship group that I volunteer with in the
spring. They gave the option of signing it or not. Seems to me that if
you're going to be offering criticism, you ought to identify yourself.
And if you're offering something creative--a yacht design, a piece of
music--you hope you'll be identified with it.

I was out in the boat barn where my other boat lives on Sunday. My
brother and I went out to pick up the new mainsail, which had been
dropped off on the boat. Back in the corner there's a Cal 25, one that
hasn't been launched in a few seasons but at least is indoors now. Hope
somebody gets her in the water next year.
In my region, what kills boats isn't neglect in the water. It's neglect
ashore during the storage season. The cockpit drains will plug with
leaves, and the cockpit fills up until it overflows into the cabin and
bilge, and pretty soon the boat fills up with water and everything
inside gets ruined. Then the project looks discouraging to owners or
prospective owners and the boat is abandoned.

Yo Charlie,
1- I have been a member since about 1995
2- I still have my Cal 46, since March 17 1982
Due to health challenges, (Heart Attack 10/21/17) She is for sale :-(
Interested parties contact me off the CalBoats List. I have receipts for everything I've bought since 1982.
What is this "... end of season..." you speak of ? Down here in Florduh, our season is 12 months. No comprende?

Happy to be a part of the group! I've gotten some excellent advice so far
on my engine project. Hopefully, I can return the favor at some point. I've
got my order in today to Trans Atlantic Diesels, Inc. thanks to the
referral from Tom Vandiver.

Hi Tom, Sorry to hear of your heart problem. I am in my eight week of recovery from a quadruple by-pass, aortic valve replacement done on 9/11. I will go back to work on 11/6. At this time, I feel great. What bothers me the most is my foot on the right leg, the one they took the vein from. From about three inches above the ankle all the way across the top of the foot to the toes, it tingles like the foot is asleep. Sometimes it will feel hot in spots, and sometimes intense pressure in spots. The pain is enough to keep me up at night and I usually tolerate pain very well. The doctor gave me a script for oxycodone and one of them helps me sleep. I hope you have a good recovery and don't miss too much sailing. I missed the last two months and had to take the boat out of the water on the 28th.
Take care, Ken
