Tachometer in Cal 33-2

Have a question about the tach in my Cal 33-2. Mine started jumping somewhat. It reads low or rather, it bounces and can't stay at I guess whatever the RPM of the engine actually is. But after a while, maybe it has warmed up, the tach starts working. Anyone encountered this? Could it be wiring or does this sound like the tach is failing? Does anyone know the model tach I need to purchase for replacement? I suspect it has an internal problem. I glanced at the wiring and nothing looks out of sorts. Didn't really see any corrosion or anything. Thanks, Leslie Newman Puffin 1986 Cal 33-2

Mine would read at about ½ speed. When I wiggled the connector at the engine (port side low) where the harness to the instrument panel plugged in, it read correctly. I intended to clean the connections but never did it.. Now it reads low all the time. I’ll be doing an engine service soon so I will clean the contacts then. Thanks Al. Mine is sort of jumping when I throttle up. At first it was jumping around the RPM I was running. Say I wanted to cruise at 1700, the needle would pulse a little above and back. But last couple times out when I throttle up it would not go up past say 1500 and yet I know I was at 2000 by engine sound. And besides not showing true RPM, it is bouncing like it is trying to get to the true reading. I was thinking the tachometer itself was failing, but I have not actually put a meter on anything or checked the wiring at the sender. So I have some homework to do this coming Saturday. Unfortunately tinned wire was not used when these boats were built. Any exposed wiring or connectors will corrode in time. If enough wire is available, strip back to clean copper and use a sealed connector to reattach. Hello Leslie, I would start by making sure contacts are clean on the engine grounds and where ever it connects to the engine. It could be the tack it's self.
