Thanks all for the earlier advice about keel and rudder voids. Cutting right to the chase, are there two sheaves/blocks at the masthead for mainsail halyards? Many thanks in advance and please let me know if my Yahoo signature is deficient. --Bob M

Bob, if your halyard is external (or it enters back into the mast on t) are using 2 sheaves at the masthead. Sometimes, the aft sheave is larger than the forward. It helps keep the main headboard away from the mast. P.S. I’m glad your boat does not already have a “different new owner”. My CAL34 has 2 pairs of sheaves at the masthead/ one for the main halyard and one for the foresail. They’re run external to the mast. > On Nov 13, 2017, at 8:08 PM, 'Charlie Husar' hu… [at] gmail.com [Cal_Boats] <Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com> wrote: > > Bob, if your halyard is external (or it enters back into the mast on t) are using 2 sheaves at the masthead. Kieren, is your aft main sheave larger than the forward? By the way, unless someone has some tricks (e.g., running a dowel or screwdriver in as one is extracting a lateral pin that holds the sheaves ), replacing the sheaves with mast up is quite difficult. Especially since most of the parts don’t float. One learns as one ages, and then one forgets. Thanks Charlie. The reason for my question is that the "shackle end" of a wire-rope halyard is at the top of the mast (thanks PO). There is a second, all rope halyard that runs to the same area in the aft top of the mast. I am a little concerned that if I raise the main with the all rope halyard, the shackle from the other main halyard (the wire-rope one) might somehow jam both sheaves/blocks up there. I'll eventually get someone to the top to sort it out but was hoping to do some sailing before then. I would go up the mast myself but am too old/fat/cowardly/wise. :-) --Bob M

Chris, the springs that shoot out of the pawls during winch maintenance make the cutest little “blip” sound when they hit the water. Just a quick correction/clarification. The semi-mysterious second main halyard is actually the headsail halyard. Kind of embarrassing. I'll try to do better fact checking before future posts/questions. Cheers --Bob M
