1989 CAL 39 MKIII
NEWMAN2017-12-13 19:28 UTC
Question about a 1989 CAL 39 MKIII. The ad reads that the hull is cored 18"
outbound of the keel. Is this true, a CAL 39 of that vintage has a cored
hull?
Thanks,
Leslie

I thought (could be wrong) that the last MK III cal was around 1982. I think anything from 1989 would be a MK IV and might have a cored hull. I know my 79 MK II is solid glass everywhere in the hull.

I have a 1984 CAL 39 MKIII and have no reason to believe that the hull is
solid glass. The 1989 looks like a completely different boat.

The 1988 and later CAL 39 is a Hunt design.

Thanks. I know that the year is a Hunt design. I am trying to find out if
the hull is cored. Based on an ad, they state the hull is cored 18"
outboard of the keel, with solid fiberglass 'windows' where there are
through hulls. I was surprised to read that the hull was cored.

Our cal is an ‘87 cal 33. I have cores where the thru hulls were drilled 1” + solid fiberglass.
I think Cals of this vintage were built in the same factory as O’day. Later models 90s were built by another builder. Hull molds were sold, and I thought the 33 & 39 also modified the “sugar scoop” walk through transom. Other mods like cored hulls, I have not heard about.

I finally found the ad I had read. East Coast yacht sales. Note the hull
description. I myself would not want a cored hull and was surprised to find
a CAL that had one. Was wantingto verify.

My Cal 33-2 is a 1986 model that was built in 1985. I have not discovered anywhere in the hull where there is a core material. All through-hull holes were solid fiberglass — they left them on the boat when it was commissioned.
The deck, however, is cored with plywood — looks to be 1/2”. This has been consistent wherever we have added deck accessories.

Donald,
Thanks. I am really only curious about the 39. I am fairly certain this is
some anomaly near the end just before Cal went under. I would think most
all Cal boats have solid hull. But I know you can't tell by looking at the
exterior. That one ad of that 39 is only what prompted my question. Maybe
the seller is mistaken.
