Leaking hatch...
Bart van Halteren2018-01-07 05:19 UTC
Hi all, the large Bomar hatch is leaking and I've tried all I can to fix it (reseal the frame and screws with silicon, make the rubber seal come out more by filling the ridge it is mounted in with silicon so it seals tighter onto the frame, taped the top glass edges in case it comes from there... to no avail. With a little amount of rain it leaks. Anyone had this before and has any suggestions? Pic attached. Blue tape I put on there to check if it would still leak (assuming the blue tape is watertight for a little while).
Any suggestions? Thanks! Bart

I ran into this on my Cal 39 MKII. The glass is some sort of plexi glass and with dark tent it had discolored and been scratched so I elected to replace the old glass and went with a wind shield grade glass. The auto glass company that cut the glass provided a glue that they use for windshield and that is what I ended up using.
So the end result that I would suggest for you is go to your local auto glass company and buy the windshield glue and reinstall the glass. Sometimes it’s just easier to reinstall to fix a leak than it is trying to seal an old leak.

i could also suggest you remove the hatch and take it to them if you can afford it or are strapped for time

Silicone is a very bad bedding compound when bedding hardware to fiberglass. Reason is it doesn’t work because it is relatively inflexible and so most always leads to leaks. Worse, all remnants of Si must be removed (tough to do) before using a proper purpose-made bedding compound because nothing sticks to Si. I like butyl. Everyone has their favorite, it seems.
Si may work for some other purpose, but not for bedding to fiberglass or wood. Ask me how I know (had another boat whose PO was in love with Si. The boat leaked like a sieve wherever Si was used).
Specialty compounds (derived from Si?) are great for attaching/sealing plexi to its frame, as has been mentioned.

Silicon sticks to plexiglass where things like Life Calk do not. I don't
know about fiberglass but Life Seal sticks to plexiglass and wood and I
would be shocked it it didn't stick to fiberglass. I tried everything else
before figuring that out. You clean it with turpentine. Other solvents
will attack the plexiglass or not clean the calking.

Hi Allen,
I believe we are saying the same thing regarding silicone use on plexiglas. Perhaps I was a bit unclear in that regard.

I was just suggesting Life Seal as an appropriate material. It is the only
sealant that I think will work for bedding plexiglass to wood and if Si
doesn't work on fiberglass, I am 99% sure Life Seal will.

Bart,
Those hinge bolts look a bit small to me - probably not original. Make
sure they have a smooth shank and have a snug fit or the hatch will not
seal as tightly as it should on that edge.
I did re-bed both my hatches since the original sealant (5200 maybe)
dried out after 20 some years; also replaced the rubber gasket material
(still available from Bomar, I believe).

Duane

Side question. How does Life Seal translate into 3M caulk products?
Many Thanks

Life seal is Polyurethane and Silicone. I am not aware of a similar 3M
product.

Hi Duane and all. Thanks for your suggestions. I indeed now saw that the rubber in the hatch isn't as compressed onto the lower part around the area of the hinge bolts. A bit weird. I need to raise the lower part with extra rubber, because I cannot make the top ribber ring protrude more.
Thanks so much! Bart
