Paul,
Sometime back, we had an actual site before we became yahoo groups. It had a lot of really cool info. Like owners could pin the location of your boat on a map so you could see who was close to you.
Cal Yacht Clubs lawyers sent a letter to the person who registered address to ceese and desist. We were illegaly representing thier club and wanted our site shut down. They gave him 30 days to shut it down. After that he would be fined a large amout of money each day until he did. He didn't have the means to fight them.

Dunno if this is a legal issue or not but I was typing in "Cal" for something else on Facebook (don't even remember what) and "Cal Yachts" popped up as a potential page I might be looking for so I thought "cool, let me check it out". Well below is what came up. Should we contact Facebook to protest or flood their page with real Cal yachts or just let it go?
Personally I'd like to see a real Cal Facebook page. Lot's easier and quicker than writing and opening multiple emails and I'd guess Facebook is going to be around longer than Yahoo.
Something to think about.

I was on Facebook and then realized 1. It is a time suck. 2. My real
Friends I do stuff with. I don't need to post because we did it together or
got together and talked about it. 3. Facebook is all about facebook. 4.
Social media is destroying the country.
Just my opinions of course.
I deactivated my account in 2016. Never have missed it one second.

Hope I do not make all of you angry. But a while back I created a page of
FB to compliment this one, to make sure we were keeping up with the times.
It even has a link to this page, and when real sailor questions get asked,
I refer them here for the experts. I ended up deleting my account on FB a
while back. Apparently, when I did that someone else grabbed the reins of
power. I am a mere member now, although it still shows I started the FB
page.
Here is the link. I do not control the photo for the page. But many
members there are members here, too. Sailing seems to be dying out a bit,
as often acknowledged here, so I wanted to make sure the Cal Boats were
getting their due on FB, the emerging platform of choice. Who knows how
long Yahoo will survive. I wanted to promote Cals as best I could. No
money is involved. Just the boats and presence on the Internet. This will
always be THE Cal Boats site.
So hate me if you will. But that's what I did. To the extent I can, I
will gladly cede whatever authority or power I may have had to this group.

Good job, Bruce. Ignore the comments that all social media is bad. It isn't. It's just another tool, badly used by some, good by others. What is bad, however, is that old generations always have to be negative about younger generations' tools, music, new norms, etc. It's just a sign of getting old...
I for one appreciate the Cal Yahoo group (now that is indeed likely to die soon as Yahoo is a terribly managed company) and FB page.

Facebook comes w it’s pluses and minuses
There is no better forum for sharing info out there.
They do track your every click and it does require
A bit of knowledge to know how to
Limit the things you don’t want to see.
Facebook has become a gateway to information. There is nothing out there that is as simple or as fast to publish, share and discuss ideas.

It's not that old folks are not willing to try new things, it's partly that we've been around longer and have seen new things come and go a lot more (called experience). It helps us make choices. At 73, I still don't think I am "old" yet. I do know people who are more than 20 years younger who are now shortening their lives by sitting with FB in daily addiction, perhaps learning something they needed to know or share, but mostly becoming physically lame. And some have forgotten how to actually hold a conversation. Some of us remember when a new administrator was needed for this list of ours. I will be eternally grateful for them stepping up, and will remain here as long as the list or I last. I don't object to others creatively advancing (if that's the proper word) the enthusiasm of Cal boaters into media forms that inspire them, I would hate to see the list go as a direct result. Helen Horn, too busy boating to sit in front of flat screen all day.

There are a ton of activities that compete for peoples time and attention via social media. The decision to be there or not be there needs to be made based on what there is to gain by being there and what the cost of a no show is.

It is not an issue of use of time, It is a issue of Facebook ethics and practices. A close look into Facebook and Mr. Zuckerberg's world views may cause some of us to not wish to add to Facebook's success. There are privacy issues in Facebook, Google and others that ,newly released information, will cause users concern. This includes of censorship, select priority of issues and much more. Subject: Re: [Cal_Boats] Cal on Facebook
Hope I do not make all of you angry. But a while back I created a page of FB to compliment this one, to make sure we were keeping up with the times. It even has a link to this page, and when real sailor questions get asked, I refer them here for the experts. I ended up deleting my account on FB a while back. Apparently, when I did that someone else grabbed the reins of power. I am a mere member now, although it still shows I started the FB page.
Here is the link. I do not control the photo for the page. But many members there are members here, too.. Sailing seems to be dying out a bit, as often acknowledged here, so I wanted to make sure the Cal Boats were getting their due on FB, the emerging platform of choice. Who knows how long Yahoo will survive. I wanted to promote Cals as best I could. No money is involved. Just the boats and presence on the Internet. This will always be THE Cal Boats site.
So hate me if you will. But that's what I did. To the extent I can, I will gladly cede whatever authority or power I may have had to this group.

Although, now that Verizon owns yahoo, and former verizon exec, Pai helped slam the door on net neutrality and allowed isp's to capture traffic, history and sell it and throttle performance, it's scary all over.
However, recall that zuckerberg has proposed thst facebook become the news portal.. go there for everything.
And he is dancing with a political career in his future.
Oh, sorry. I'm headed out for a motorcycle ride now to clear my head for a while.
Cheers all.

As an abstainer from "social media," except for some listservs for
hobbies & professional interests, I'm not the best expert, but I've read
the Facebook is mostly older people now and that the young ones have
migrated to Instagram or probably some newer place by now.
What offended me about Facebook was how vigorously they seemed to
collect and sell data about us. It's not confined to FB, of course. If
I look at an ad online or do a product search, I'll be sure to get lots
of ads for the same thing popping up, which is annoying (if I wanted or
needed the product, I probably bought it already; if not, I don't want
to keep seeing the same product). But Facebook seemed to be the most
aggressive data-collector and data-seller out there.
And, as I said earlier, it seems to be a great way to get people
agitated. People start calling each other names back and forth,
without the restraint that we usually maintain in real face-to-face
conversation.
So my preference is for keeping this old Yahoo site going as long as it
can function. It works well. We can share information. WE can learn
from each other.
