Great Sailing Movie
pw… [at] aol.com2018-02-04 00:00 UTC
Someone on Facebook recommended "The Weekend Sailor" as a good sailing movie and boy was it ever! It was about the first Whitbread Race (now the Volvo Ocean Race) and this rich Mexican guy who decided to enter it having never sailed before. Bought a new Swan 65, recruited some of his family and a few "experts" and won the friggin' race! It is a documentary and stories are told by all the crew members about the race and all the stuff that happened.
I got lucky because we just got a new TV and cable box with voice search capability so I just asked my remote to find the movie and it did LOL. Hit another button to record it because it came on at noon and we watched it last night. I may watch it again.
Enjoy!

It is a great movie and it's also on Amazon Prime. Don't need facebook
to find all the other great sailing movies and book recommendations they
offer.
Enjoy!

Paul,That reminds me of the young fellow with no sailing experience that purchased a 30 plus foot long sailboat (way beyond my sailing level and I've been sailing and racing for decades), signed on a barnyard chicken as first mate (I guess he couldn't find the recipe to make a Micky Finn on Google) and set off for the New World. It was written up in Latitude 38 last year. Proved to be a wise move, 'cause, how many first mates you know will lay you a fresh egg for breakfast every day+stay on deck to keep a look out no matter what the weather? Apparently, that chicken was no chicken!Jerry of Shpritz

I saw it and enjoyed it too. What struck me was the closing segments
were they talked about why they won. The crew noted that the
owner/skipper was kind and thoughtful, but also very highly prepared and
organized. It appeared to be a hippy-dippy undertaking but apparently
he brought a sense of organization and order to the task. You don't
have to be a martinet to be effective. And having fun isn't
inconsistent with success.

I took note of the exact same thing. And it crossed my mind that any
skipper who approved of, or at least didn't object to, the crew taking
ladies out for a casual spin in the official racing yacht during their
down time in Rio really couldn't be bad. ;-)

You're welcome :) I'm still waiting for them to make "The Dove"
available in my area but if you use their watchlist feature it's easy to
either check back or receive notification when it is available.
Comparatively speaking the number of sailing movies period is a joke
when stacked against other genres but as a source for possibilities all
located in one place with no ads Prime does a decent job.
Hope you enjoyed the movie!

Just like sailing is the right way to navigate on water, there's a right
way to see movies. I'll put in a plug for seeing films on a great big
screen in a big dark room and a theater-quality sound system (i.e., not
on TV). I was lucky to see "Weekend Sailor" the right way--in a very
good theater (The NY Times film guy said it was the best in the country)
right here in little Traverse City. On Sunday morning I saw /Bullitt/,
the 1968 Steve McQueen film, in the same place. Why? Because the
surviving original Mustang from the movie, one of two that McQueen
drove, is on display here.
And why am I seeing great but non-current movies in this good setting?
Because Michael Moore (yeah, that one) convinced the local Republicans
to sell him the theater for a buck. The Rotary Club owned it. The
theater had closed and the real estate was worth about $3 million. He
promised to restore and reopen the theater. He did, on time and on
budget, and it has created an economic boom in that part of town ever
since (not to mention great pleasure for us locals). Those Republicans
knew what they were doing, and so did Michael Moore, and we are all
beneficiaries of this symbiosis. It's a good example of looking beyond
labels, and besides, the whole idea of Michael Moore and the Republicans
hugging each other is just a delight.
The /Bullitt/ Mustang is original and unrestored and very, very cool. I
can send photos to any Mustang fans.
