Can do, Dave. Hi from Annapolis, MD.

CAB - (Cal Jensen)
5 - Model 25
1543 - Hull 1543
1073 - Built in October 1973
She was built on the West Coast because the first two digits are odd.
Can explain if you care.

Can anyone tell me what information the hull number can give?
I have a Cal 25. The Hull number is CAB 515431073. I don't have any
paperwork for the boat yet.
Thanks, Dave

Matt, that hull ID number is fictitious, but it sounds as good as any.
I'm sure that it was created to fill a block required in the
registration. That does not mean that you do not have a CAL 25, but it
does mean you might need other evidence to see what your hull number
really is. Looking under drawers (except that the old 25s are short on
drawers) or inside the stern might tell you if the 104 is correct.
I'm digging out my diagrams and stuff.
Cheers

Hi Fellow Cal'ers!
I haven't looked for the hull number on my boat but my title and
registration says mine is CAL25104. Did they start the CAB numbering
system sometime after 1965? I don't know when they started building Cal
25's but I figured I had the 104th one built. Anybody have any further
info on this?

PS My boat goes back in the water in 2 weeks! Then it's time to finish
the structural work - deck core, underdeck mast beam, and bulkheads.
Got some info Charlie?!?

Charlie, I seem to remember somewhere that the first digit of the hull number indicated place of manufacture, even being Jersey, as you said. That's from way back to Roger Jones. What a resource he was, not withstanding being a great human being, doing for others. I still miss his posts. I'll tell you a story, my PO had removed the rub rail and had installed a wooden replacement, which I hated, but endured because I didn't know better, but because of this list I found the resources and knowledge to return my Cal to it's original configuration, except I needed the end caps. No where to be found, until Roger offered me his from Swiss Navy, if I would make a donation to his sailing foundation. My Cal now has it's proper rub rail, thanks to Roger Jones, and Charlie Husar, who guided me in the install. My thumbs hurt for a week. Let it sit in the sun for a couple of hours, that helps.David Dobbs, Cal29 411

David, funny how things work. My boat was first owned by Robert Sears, in Detroit. He raced her many years, which is why my sail number is 5443. Sold her to a cruiser based in Cheybogan, who cruised her many years. I bought her, he sailed her to Manitowac, Wi. I took delivery and sailed back to Chicago, where she remains, awaiting the thaw. I sail out of Jackson Park Outer Harbor, belong to Jackson Park Yacht Club. When I raced the MAC, as crew, we always spent the first night back on Beaver Island, well, a lot of it at the Shamrock. Next stop was Leland and the Blue Bird Cafe for smelt and shrimp. Then we worked our way down the lake, Ludington, Grand Haven, maybe Frankfort, and then just straight across to home. Boat was an Erickson 35. I was a jib trimmer, spin trimmer. Fun days.David Dobbs

David,
I am hull #171. The first owner was JohnThompson of Oxford , Maryland on the eastern shore of Maryland .Her original name then was Windsong. In 1972 Willard and Paul Scott bought and named her Haiku. They raced her until about 1989 out of Middle River, Maryland. Then Gordon LaTrobe and his dad John bought her and raced out of Middle River also. I bought her in 2005, brought her to Annapolis and then moved her to Lake Michigan in 2014.
You may be correct, Haiku may have been built in New Jersey.

Stan, My 29 is 1972 vintage is hull #411, was built in New Jersey. I believe odd hull #s were built there, even ones in Calif. I actually found the number glassed in the starboard lazarette. David Dobbs.

Know some folks who race a 2/30. 15/16th rig. 183 rating. Strange item is that the 2/30 has a reverse canted stern with the backstay mounted at the bottom. Could this have been something to do with IOR or MORC rules? CheerCharlieAnnapolis From: Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com [mailto:Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com]

Subject: [Cal_Boats] Cal29 vs. Cal 2-30 Hi,
Well, it looks like I missed out on the deal of Century on a Cal 34-III. Now I'm looking at an ad for a Cal 2-30 on Craigslist. They weigh more than a Cal 34, have a 1' shorter water line, but carry about as much sail area. Interestingly, they have about the same PHRF as a Cal 29, about 183. I was wondering, tho, is the Cal2-30 a more rugged "sea boat" as regards the keel, or, is the Dreaded Beam the same concern? I talked to one Cal Guru, Odin, and he said he'd never heard about Cal 34's having an issue with their beam, but, I have heard of the Cal 40 having such issues. There's a truly fantastic series on rebuilding a Cal 40 on Youtube, from the "ground up" on to quote a deplorably non-nautical terminology. They even gutted the boat, flipped it upside down, and re-glassed the hull around the hull to keel joint. Awe-some!
