Re: [Cal_Boats] Cal 34-III Just re-appeard on Craigslist
I am reading thos whole thread, so ai see the Cal 34 MK III. The MK III has a taller rig and shorter boom. The boat was improved for cruising. I prefer the interior layout with a aft galley, nav station, enclosed head and single aft berth. What it gives up is access to the engine and steering components. It is truely ready for the open seas. We sailed Allegra in 35 plus knots on a deep reached one knight and never had a wave wash over us on the way to a Catalina Cal Champagne Cruise.
The boat was sold and sailed to Sydney Aus, where she lives and sails today.

Helen, my older brother built a "Tectronic" Oscilloscope when he was still in H.S. It was pretty cool but darned if you couldn't watch a single TV show on it. I guess you meant "Lectronic". I'll check that out too. While I was trying to watch TV on it, he went on to become one of the Kahunas of the New Silicon Valley, and partly responsible for all those miles and miles of fruit orchards along the 101 Freeway turning into miles and miles of apartments and shopping centers. That's progress. I used to sail my plywood catamaran out of the Palo Alto Marina. Ha ha, try that now! Maybe by the end of the 21st century, that two extra feet of water will allow that totally silted in Marina to come back on line.
Jerry PS: Back to 'roundabouters'. I found three Cal 46's, a Cal 30, Some Lapworths, Robin Lee Grahams' Lapworth 24, a Lapworth 36, 48, and a Cal 33. Didn't find any Cal 34's yet (R-there?), but the two circumnav's by a couple, first done in an englineless Columbia 24 (which model?) and then in a larger boat soon after, is pretty impressive. I guess my Cal 24-1 could make it if I was lucky!..and even nuttier than I think I am. I know of one Cal 24-1 in Hawaii, but whether it was sailed there, or shipped as a kit (mine, #71, was a kit) and built there is unknown.

Jerry, go to 'l'ectronic latitude. When it opens up, go to circumnavigation or navigators. They list the boats they started with and finished with, there are lots of Cals that have circumnavigate. Helen

Any Cal 34-III owners out there?
How is she as a long distance blue water boat?I
think I've heard that at least one has circumnavigated (likely an older
Mk-1), and at least several others have done extensive Pacific Ocean
puddle jumping. Some say the Cal 34 is at best a coastal cruiser, others say they've come thru the some of the worst weather the Pacific can throw at a boat and come thru with flying colors.
And,
how is the Mk-III as a racer? For some reason it rates 4 seconds a mile
lower, even tho, not with standing it's taller mast, it has
significantly less sail area, and significantly more displacemen
