Test and Chesapeake Weather

Checking mail delivery on our Cal site.
Those in the Chesapeake Bay area with boats in the water should check their
dock lines. Prediction for super low water and gale winds for Friday 3/2.
Many Thanks

Let's hear it for the miracle of floating docks. My other boat lives in
a marina that has floating docks and fixed ones. She's on the
floaters. When there's a big NE blow, the water rises... but so do the
docks and docklines, A strong SW takes all the water out? Down they all
go. I remember visiting the boat to check on things in 1986, a time of
record high water levels in Lake Huron. There was heavy rainfall and
flooding. I was worried. But at the marina, you couldn't get to the
docks without wading but they were just fine once you got to them.
My Cal 20 lies on a mooring. High winds always cause some concern. What
if that chain has a worn link that I missed? What if...? But
generally, the big worry is not so much my mooring system, but the other
boats'. In a mooring field, if other boats go adrift they can take out
others that were properly secured.

I'd check on your boat if it's on the hard too and reduce any windage if possible.
Wind predictions of 60mph gusts Friday afternoon into Sat morning.
Take care!

Charlie.Yeah I saw that when I had to climb up the deck ramp at 30 degrees yesterday. But doesn't that mean the opposite 6 hours later? When the storm comes-a-blowin' on shore? At least during Hurricane season the temps. are a lot milder.Jerry of Shpritz

Chris,Floating docks are great, I'm on one, but you still need to be vigilant. We have NE winds that can break our lines due to our harbor configuration when it really blows. I have replaced a few. But the floating docks are a big improvement.David Dobbs

We get 11 foot tides so floating docks really seem like more than a good
idea. I had no idea there was such a thing as non floating docks except
for really large ships.

The storm must have busted the Thomas Point wind meter. See the image below.
I checked on my boat last night, water level was lowest I ever saw it at the dock. I had previously let out the lines, but the cleats were (slightly)holding up the boat, so I did something kinda nutty, I jumped to the boat (6’ below the dock) and let out the lines - the nutty part was not the jump, but knowing that after I jumped, I had to get back up. It worked out fine but was a bit tenuous for a few seconds while hanging off the dock.
Fun stuff, but rather be sailing.
Best,
Mike Casillo

I have the Saginaw Bay (Lake Huron) weather instruments bookmarked.
That';s where my other boat lives and the instruments are located at the
entrance of the navigation channel, out in open water. I always click
on "Combined plot of wind speed, gust, and air pressure." It's fun to
see the graphic representation, and how the atmospheric pressure
correlates with wind speed. It can be dramatic.
