Wood in place of sheaves on Cal 27?
kl… [at] gmail.com2018-03-04 21:54 UTC
I have my masr down to do some work and thought id go ahead and replace the sheaves and go to all line halyards instead of wire/line.
When i went to pull them out there was a pair like i expected on the aft side of my masthead but forward end looked like they were just wood guides or something. The normal pin was there but after pulling it the wood didn't budge. I didn't want to apply to much force and break something important. The weather has been crappy so with all the mud in the work area its been hard to spend too much time poking at it.
Any ideas?

Wull, I dunno about all that, but...I will say years ago I switched to high density polyethelene single braid lines, slightly larger in diameter than steel cable, and I've not looked back. The only thing I will say is I've knoted my halyards to thicker double braid to make the first part of the pulling line easier to hand pull. Example: Amsteel, I think it's the SK75 version, or something like that. Stronger than steel, long lasting, low stretch. Wooohooo! and no MEATHOOKS!Jerry of Shpritz, Cal 24-1

Failed phenolic sheaves is my guess. Papoose had phenolic sheaves on the
old mast. I had new ones made at one point.

There is a place in Port Townsend that will replace your sheaves for the correct size to match your upgraded halyards. I have forgotten the name.

Hi,
Those wooden things are phenolic sheaves that are supposed to rotate,
but got stuck at some point and were worn away by the halyards.
My Cal 2-39 has sheaves of the same material in the same configuration,
and a second set as well: one pair forward and one pair aft.
It looks to me like the aluminum corroded and the white aluminum oxide
built up and locked the sheaves in place. You should be able to free
them with with some elbow grease. The aluminum divider should come out
also.
Try rigrite for replacements
http://www.rigrite.com/Spars/SparParts/Sheaves.php Nylatron and delrin
appear to be the new standard materials.

Yeah. Phenolic sheaves. My other boat (1961) has its originals and the
Cal 20 (1967) too. But where those boats live, the mast is down 6
months of each year so everything lasts longer. The good thing about
phenolic material is that it didn't have corrosion problems. It was the
durable nonmetallic option in those times.
