Hi Group,
I am considering selling my 1970 Cal 31 (#33). I sense from my time on the
group, that marketing in the group is inappropriate. I am just looking for
advice on where to list on the internet (free listings only), advice on
determining asking price and whether or not you would recommend a survey or
if I should let prospective buyers worry about that, Any internet
resources/links would be greatly appreciated. At this point, I am just
considering a sale, in that I don't seem to be getting enough use out of it
to justify the costs. Also, I figured it would take a couple of years to
sell anyway, so better to start early.
I can be contacted off-group at st… [at] embarqmail.com as needed.
Thanks in advance,
John Stacklyn

I have tried searching but can not find an answer to my question. Does a Cal 31 also have the dreaded beam issue? Worried my wife will kill me. She is already upset with the hours I have put in getting the boat back into shape.
Thanks, David

I am not sure on your 31. I know my 33-2 has the beam. I haven't been
worrying much about that beam. I guess at some point I should investigate.
If I find rust and the beam is still mostly good I think I will first try
treating any rust with rust converter, then encapsulator and then paint it,
if I can gain access enough to do that. I used a lot of the eastwood.com
products in restoring some old vehicles and they sell all sorts of products
to battle and contain rust.

Hmm. Looking at this older thread on sailnet, there is someone posting how
they fixed their Cal 29, but someone else chimes in about their Cal 31. It
sort of sounds like the 31 has the beam as well.
But if it ain't broke, don't fix it. I guess investigate and then figure
out if you need to do it.

it's not a difficult investigation. Look at your main Bulkheads and see if
they are bolted to a small steel tab.
The connection point is on the inside lower edge of the port and starboard
bulkhead. Sometimes hidden inside a cabinet
or under a cushion. If you have it and it is galvanized, then you have the
potential for the beam issue.
Keep in mind, if you find you have the beam, you only need to replace it if
it is failing or so corroded it is about to.

I don't think the 33-2 has the beam. My boat has a keel stepped mast.
The 33 is different designer than the lapworth earlier model. Robert hunt and associates.

The Hunt Brothers Cal 33-2 has a fiberglass beam pan system with the stays attached to the same structure with tie rods that run from the deck to the pan. It is extremely important that these tie rods be adjusted so that the deck is flat with the rig under tension. It is also designed to have a relatively loose stay system. There should be slop in your leeward stays when sailing to weather.

David, just based on sailboatdata drawings, I would suggest that the 31 has the beam. The design looks like a stretch version of the Cal 29. As I recall there were/are only a few Cal 31 owners on the list. I’m trying to remember the name of a gentleman in the Chesapeake who had one.

Charlie, I have 2 on my dock! Expanded version of the 29, very roomy below. Both friends of mine, fellow JPYCers. It's a fast boat sailed right. Don't know it's PHRF, but both sail in club races. They're probably out there tonight, well, earlier.Regards,David Dobbs

I have looked to the best of my ability and I am fairly certain that my 79 cal 31 does not have the beam
There is some kind of block under the post Looks kind of messy like it may have been a flop of epoxy or glass or something.

Hello group,
Well, it looks like my 1979 Cal 31 needs a new transmission, so I'm thinking of selling her as a "project" boat. Hull is in great shape as well as the deck and the standing rigging. The 100% furling jib was replaced with a used sail a couple of years ago and is in pretty good shape except for the UV cover coming off. It needs a new main sail and most all the running rigging. As mentioned the Volvo MSB transmission is likely shot but the MD7A 13 HP engine was rebuilt about 6 or 7 years ago and has run like a champ ever since. Forward berth cushions are okay, main cockpit ones need recovering. Probably, port lights need resealing or replacing. Finally, there's a never been used Magnum Grill. Trying to get a rough estimate of how much it might be worth. Another option would be to donate it to our Regatta/American Cancer Society auction in spring. Any input will be greatly appreciated.

You are in the NW right? Not sure why but Cal 31s hold their value over the 28s, 29s and 30s. Try high teens low 20s. Still having the old Volvo may hurt you though. I will be interested in what you find out. Good luck.

The CAL 31 has an encapsulated keel, no dreaded beam and an incredible PHRF rating. Only the CAL 30-3T then the CAL 33 beat it until you get to the CAL 36.
It was first introduced in '79 which put it at one of the latest designs by Bill Lapworth.
I think it is the best kept secret of the CAL's. Yea, mine has the salt water cooled MD7A, but I have gone though it and have it purring (as much as a diesel can).

I installed a Beta Marine 20 several years ago when the Volvo kept over heating. The 20 horse sure helps we some of the opposing currents we find ourselves in sometimes in the Salish Sea.

Getting ready to donate my 1979 Cal 31 for auction at our local regatta. Transmission needs rebuild, but curious as to what the value of the working Volvo Penta MD7A might be. Thanks.
