Hi Group,
I am considering selling my 1970 Cal 31 (#33). I sense from my time on the group, that marketing in the group is inappropriate. I am just looking for advice on where to list on the internet (free listings only), advice on determining asking price and whether or not you would recommend a survey or if I should let prospective buyers worry about that, Any internet resources/links would be greatly appreciated. At this point, I am just considering a sale, in that I don't seem to be getting enough use out of it to justify the costs. Also, I figured it would take a couple of years to sell anyway, so better to start early.
I can be contacted off-group at stacklynj@embarqmai l.com as needed.
Thanks in advance,
John Stacklyn

Thank you Don.
Actually I need to check those tensions on mine.

The Hunt Brothers Cal 33-2 has a fiberglass beam pan system with the stays attached to the same structure with tie rods that run from the deck to the pan. It is extremely important that these tie rods be adjusted so that the deck is flat with the rig under tension. It is also designed to have a relatively loose stay system. There should be slop in your leeward stays when sailing to weather.

What year is your 33.2 with the steel beam?

I don't think the 33-2 has the beam. My boat has a keel stepped mast. The 33 is different designer than the lapworth earlier model. Robert hunt and associates. John Raxter Cal 33 Oriental NC On Jun 29, 2016, at 4:04 PM, NEWMAN d2… [at] gmail.com [Cal_Boats] < Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com > wrote:
I am not sure on your 31. I know my 33-2 has the beam. I haven't been worrying much about that beam. I guess at some point I should investigate. If I find rust and the beam is still mostly good I think I will first try treating any rust with rust converter, then encapsulator and then paint it, if I can gain access enough to do that. I used a lot of the eastwood.com products in restoring some old vehicles and they sell all sorts of products to battle and contain rust. I have tried searching but can not find an answer to my question. Does a Cal 31 also have the dreaded beam issue? Worried my wife will kill me. She is already upset with the hours I have put in getting the boat back into shape. Thanks, David

David,
I had a new 1982 Cal 31 and it did not a have a beam. Looking forward in
the bilge, you could see a square wooden post that extended from the
underside of the floor pan and located under the compression post. This square
post extended to a couple inches from the top of the ballast and stopped. At
the time, I looked at a couple other Cal 31's and they were the same. So
the mast compression was supported by the deck, compression post and
fiberglass floor pan.

Getting ready to donate my 1979 Cal 31 for auction at our local regatta. Transmission needs rebuild,
******** We used to sell rebuilt Volvo MS transmissions for $2495, until the parts became very hard to find.
but curious as to what the value of the working Volvo Penta MD7A might be.
********** Not much, as these engines are now quite old, and all are raw water cooled. Here's how they usually die - the block or head rots out, allowing raw water to mix with the oil. The engine then seizes, and is a total write off. VERY POOR candidate for rebuilding. Joe DeMers
Thanks.
