Cal 34 mkIII flex sole??

Walter March2018-04-14 19:05 UTC
I found a Cal 34 mkIII damaged by the last hurricane in south Florida. It seems that she can be repaired,( with lots of work, time and money). But the floor pan (sole) is flexing, and the big bilge cover seats higher than the sides. Could that be an indication of mayor problems? On my Cal 2-29 the sole is firm, rigid, and the bilge cover seat at the lowest . Walter Sent from Yahoo Mail for iPhone

The bilge cover in the sole of my cal2-27 and cal 36 sit on the rim ledge of the sole(indented rlm so that the plate sits flat). However, there are cross pieces(braces) that aim side to side. Under those cross pieces are tunnel cuts so water etc Drains toward the bilge pump . The tops of these plywood braces support the center of the plate. Those pieces are glassed to the insides of the bilge. If this is the encapsulated keel, as are mine, I would be wary as to how they got stuffed up above the floor line. Again if...perhaps the beating it took may have damaged the bilge shape. And maybe there is severe damage to the turn of the bilge to the keel cavity line, cracking, fissures, inspect closely as that part carries the keel. Is it sitting on the keel now in the yard? Also Walter, check for how the sole unit is installed (Or detached from its own framing) as the unit is like a pan that is molded up around the saloon, under the compression post, the settee shape and base for galley cabs. Walter the mark lll ..was our 1st Choice. When we wanted to up Grade from helens beloved "NOAH'S KID" Cal 29 1974 ....we were afraid That our crew would not notice 6" here 5" there. . Then our Cal 36 Came along ..and we went that way ...however after removing 200 lbs Of bottom. Paint..we noticed hairline Cracks lontudtally in keel turn.. Further investigation we found 4 to 5 Inches of resian and exposed roving.. We worked on this project in the Yard .,...so its fixable ..but tbe yard Would want alot to do the layups We got a GREAT DEAL were still working..on it dam now my post is lost Edward On Apr 14, 2018 12:09 PM, "Walter March ma… [at] yahoo.com [Cal_Boats]" < Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com> wrote: I found a Cal 34 mkIII damaged by the last hurricane in south Florida. It definitely needs to be surveyed..It also begs the question, does Walter want it for his personal choice, and not for resale, because even if it is completely restorable, it could cost more (or not) than he could recover. Insurance companies now track salvage issues. If damage is minor, it could be a personal success story. We don't know his skills at discovery, analysis, or repairs. I felt awareness related to his question might help him use caution. As opposed to snapping it up and learning the many variables. Good luck in finding a good surveyor, and I hope this Cal is restorable , a great sailing boat. Apparently the boat was moved to another slip, after the storm and not properly tied. Was damaged by the piles and the dock itself , and has a lot of rain water inside. It’s hard to see in the picture, but they are depressions on the sole, both sides of the bilge, and it’s soft. The slip is shallow, so my guess is that the keel was banging the bottom. The sides of the floor pan seems alright, well attached. They are also two soft spots on the “roof” (cabin top)I love my 2-29, I want a bigger boat in order to expand my sailings,I have experience working with fiberglass, but dealing with the keel problem could be too much Sent from Yahoo Mail for iPhone On Sunday, April 15, 2018, 3:00 AM, Helen Horn he… [at] sbcglobal.net [Cal_Boats] <Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com> wrote: It definitely needs to be surveyed..It also begs the question, does Walter want it for his personal choice, and not for resale, because even if it is completely restorable, it could cost more (or not) than he could recover.
