I don't know that I would call our Cals restoration projects, although the 27 T2 needed it when we forst acquired her about 19 years ago and our Cruising 36 would be considered to have been a restoration project when we opened her up in January. some friends had seen her before we arrived and were certain we would junk her. Now she's better than ever. Reggie Sent from Outlook<http://aka.ms/weboutlook> From: Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com <Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com> on behalf of 'Philip A. Wow! I guess I should thank the POs and powers that be that mine's not worse......quite the project you had going on. I did use life caulk on both sides of what I think you're calling drop boards and I'm calling runner boards and was able to seal all around the inside of all 3 boards where they meet the cabin top. Also was able to get to the outside of port and starboard boards with the life caulk. Yes if you can get any info from the guy who did yours that would be great! The pictures are a great help, thanks! Yours doesn't have outside "runner boards" that mine has which has the grooves the hatch track in. They have never been taken off either and I know getting in to that one would be a disaster. Hopefully the pictures will go through this time. They're a little deceiving as it looks like that forward board is on there without the hatch. Should be an interesting day... Thanks again, Faith P.S. Don't know about Astoria but if you're ever up around the San Juans, let me know. After all isn't that why we all put up with the rain, the winter wind and the leaks? On 2018-05-02 08:55, Philip A. Ahoy all, I purchased my 1969 Cal 34 (Hull # 230) just about 2 years ago and have been neck deep in projects ever since. The boat hadn't sailed in 20 years, so she needed a ton of work. I got her out for Opening Day on the Bay here on the SF Bay last April, and have been taking her out a couple times a month ever since. She sails beautifully, and seems so happy to be out on the water again!! Here's the short list of projects: Replaced all window glass, resealed all windowsNew standing riggingNew bottom job--approximately $13,000 in materials and haulout fees (paid $5k to have all paint sanded off, yard didn't allow owners to do any bottom paint sanding). Extensive blister work--maybe 3,000 1" blisters which had previously been filled, but after boat sat for 20 years all that work was shot.Conduit inside mast for electrical wires, new electrical wiresNew nav lights on deck and aloftMast head overhaul--ground out old phenolic sheaves to accept all rope halyards, resolved corrosion, etc.Installed "new" A4--had a 1965 motor in the garage that I put inComplete removal/refabrication/reinstallation of all companionway hatch wood, removed/painted(AlexSeal)/reinstalled fiberglass hatch componentsFabricated new coamings for cockpit--went with Afromosia instead of Teak for $$ and environmental reasonsComplete overhaul of 12v and 120v electrical systems. Rewired entire boat. Installed roller furler for headsailNew covers for all foam berth cushionsInstalled 12v/120v refrigeratorInstalled freshwater pump for pressurized water in galley and headChasing down leaks, chasing down leaks, chasing down leaks.......gaaaaah!!!! There's more, but like I said--short list! Happy to elaborate on any of these projects. It's been a hell of a journey. The companionway hatch job was a big one, sounds like there's some folks embarking on that project right now. I had rot in the deck around the slider and leaks throughout so I took it all out and epoxied the rot/voids and then fabricated all new wood components and reinstalled everything. Painted the fiberglass slide, drop boards, and cover while I was at it. It's the shiniest newest looking component on the boat and doesn't leak--woo hoo!! If anyone has any advice on how to get the quarter berths to stop leaking, I'm all ears. I've chased down the obvious leaks, including never-been-sealed jibsheet block tracks (who would do such a thing?!?), and still, water's coming in somewhere! Another huge project that I'm desperately hoping to avoid is the galvanized steel beam under the floor pan that supports the mast. I've got some serious rust, but it's isolated to a few locations and I'm hoping to keep it at bay. There's enough steel there to avoid having to cut the floor pan in half to install a new beam, but I'm not sure of the best method to get to the existing rust and stop it. Any advice welcome!! Your list sounds a lot like my litany of things I did over the last 20 years, except for the expensive bottom job, fridge and roller furler. Perhaps mainly being in fresh water makes a difference. Tell me more about this steel beam supporting the mast. I have read a few posts about such things but did not think there was one on the Cal 34s. Can you post some pictures of your boat? P. When you get your Cal 34 back together, you might want to consider sailing her down to Astoria next May to participate in the Oregon Offshore Race up to Victoria. It would be good to have another vintage Cal 34 in the race. Good luck. P. I do have runner boards. In the pictures they had been removed. By drop boards I mean the boards I use to close up the companionway. Attached is a picture after it was reassembled but before I sanded and applied Cetol. As for the Oregon Offshore Race, the trip and down the coast can be a real bash, or not. Crossing the infamous Columbia Bar is usually pretty easy, especially if one crosses during slack tide and avoids a big ebb tide. Most times I have crossed it has been flat. The sail north is an exercise in suffering cold, wet, fatigue and sleep deprivation, and all the while usually with light wind on the nose - or a real blow. Halfway up the coast most find themselves wondering why on earth they are doing it. After entering the Strait of Juan de Fuca there are other challenges, often followed by going through Race Rocks and the toilet bowel currents outside of Victoria Harbor. But, as one approaches the finish thoughts usually turn to looking forward to doing it again the following year. Then, entering Victoria, an easy customs clearance and being greeted by the race committee with hot towels and a bottle of bubbly, it gets even better, and the next year’s race seems too far off. I encourage all to give it a try. The hardest part is the first year with all that is involved in meeting the safety requirements. P. Hi Glen, Quite the list! How did you seal the forward side of the for drop board when you put the hatch back together? That's where I'm in a conundrum....can't figure how to get to it with the slide back on and can't put the slide back on without putting that board in first. As for the leaks in the quarter berths, check the "cubbies" in the coaming boards. I had leaks in the corners on both port and starboard sides. I put a little life caulk in the small holes on both sides of the holes and that did the trick. It's hard to find the holes because they're not often visible but you'll feel them if you get your finger all the way into the corner. I've got some serious rust, but it's isolated to a few locations and I'm hoping to keep it at bay. Got it. I still can't tell if my pictures came through. Were you able to see them? Might make the communication a little more clear. Your deck is gorgeous! Nice work....it's still on the list for me. My slide board sits on the 3 teak runner boards with no plate on top of them. Then outside of those are 2 longer runner boards, port and starboard, that run the whole length that the hatch can go which have grooves in the interior that the hatch slides along...make sense? Which is why I can't just pull the slider board up and off, unless of course I take those off, but I know that's just asking for more leaks. Are those the ones that are still not in this picture? The Offshore Race certainly sounds intriguing and a lot of fun. Have to say it's way out of my league. I've often thought about sailing her south and then have heard too many stories of trying to come into Astoria...one in which he lost his boat, but he was pushing too hard. Many things to do on the list before she's ready for a long journey. Thanks again for your help Faith On 2018-05-02 10:42, Philip A. Lewis wrote: > I do have runner boards. > > Thanks again, > > Faith > > P.S. Don't know about Astoria but if you're ever up around the San Juans, let me know. After all isn't that why we all put up with the rain, the winter wind and the leaks? > > On 2018-05-02 08:55, Philip A. Lewis wrote: > > Well, this certainly brings back memories. When we took Soufflé apart in 2015-2016 we had to deal with a small patch of rot at the aft port corner of the companionway hatch, and that led to taking the entire thing apart. I did not do it myself due to a lack of competence, confidence and time. I believe that the fellow who did all the reconstruction and rot fixing did not use butyl tape but either 5200 or Life Caulk. I will inquire and let you know. It now leaks a lot less and a lot differently, and I think the water that still comes in when it is rainy and windy (a common occurrence in the Pacific NW) comes in through the corners of the drop boards. Attached are the pictures I have of the hatch deconstructed in case that is of any help. I am also attaching one of the finished product pictures, though not showing the hatch. > > When you get your Cal 34 back together, you might want to consider sailing her down to Astoria next May to participate in the Oregon Offshore Race up to Victoria. I did so last season as the mold on the underside of the hatch was the last moldy part that needed attention on the boat. > > Here's my dilemma...given that you can't get the hatch off without taking the three "runner boards" that the hatch sits on off as well, how do you then fully seal the forward "runner board" when you put her back together?
