Cal 28 window moulding
jo… [at] yahoo.com2018-05-08 14:24 UTC
Hello all, I'm changing a broken window in our 1969 Cal 28 flush deck. The frame is the original one. I can get the 3/16" glass at a local glass shop but not the channel moulding for it. I tried Seals Spars in California but Steve no longer has any. He said he's going to try another place for me that might have it but in the meantime, I'm wondering if anyone has (A) The name of somewhere I can get it or (B) Some you'd like to part with and which I'll past cost and shipping for. If you have some or know where I can get some and have it delivered to me this week, that'd be great. I also need the vertical moulding piece that prevents water from coming around the slider window. If no one has any idea, my helper says we can reuse what we have but may need to soften it a little. How can I soften it if need be?
FYI: Seals does stock the rub rail material that'll fit my boat and tells me, contrary to what others have said, that it's really not that hard to install if you do it when the weather's hot. Not a problem here. I think I'm going to do it. The new rub rail material isn't square and angled like the original and is a little more narrow but Steve says it gives a much dressier appearance. He used to work for Cal Jensen.

Hi Joseph,
Try Marks Plastics in Corona Ca. He did all the boats in that time frame. I did mine 2 years ago. He was very helpful.

Joe,He's right, it's not that hard technically, but your thumbs will be sore for awhile! Also good advice about hot weather. I did my 29 in one day, with help. DPO had removed the vinyl and installed a wooden one, which the spiders just loved. My wife hates spiders, and one evening we were sailing with a little heel, and the spiders started coming over the rail like an invasion. She freaked! Next season I installed the original rub rail, end of spider problem.Charlie Husar has some good instructions on how to.David Dobbs Cal29 411

On the subject of rubrails.... My Cal 20 has the 1960s vinyl rubrail
that also caps the hull/deck joint. And because it's a raised-deck Cal,
the water runs down over the rubrail. And so does the dirt, which gets
trapped between rubrail and the hull. It accumulates, and pretty soon
there's moss growing. Has anybody used a low-tenacity sealer/adhesive
to seal up the point of contact between the vinyl and the hull?
Maintaining my original vinyl with buoy paint seems easier than
replacing it, but the crud that accumulates now has tempted me to
remove it for cleaning. The temptation has not been strong enough to
actually make me do it, I'll note.

Hi Joe,
I did my rubrail as well with the help of one other person. The key
really is to do it when it's hot so the rubrail is more pliable...makes
it easy to pull it over the seam and around the boat. It's also really
interesting to discover what's going on around the seam :-) You can do
it in a day with the help of another person.
Have fun
