Stuck in San Diego for weekend
david howe2018-05-11 14:59 UTC
Free day Sunday in San Diego/ Tijuana. Any thing I shouldn’t miss seeing? I always wonder if there’s a great place I should stop by if in the area. Other than the local WM.

Hi David,
I'm in San Diego. It really depends on what part of town you'll be in.
Whether it's North county or more towards the city/bay. Tijuana (TJ) would
be a whole day event, usually, because you would have to wait to get back
to the US and if you drive down, that can be up to 4 hours. If you go to
MX, I would recommend Rosarito over TJ but you can also park and walk
across to TJ and save the traffic. It can still take up to an hour or more
walking back. You need your passport. Used to be able to just use DL. I
would recommend going to Balboa Park. Always something going on over there.
Very beautiful place! If you're in north county, hit up Fidel's in Del Mar
or, just about anywhere in Del Mar. There's a million things I could think
of. Send me a separate email if you like some more detail or want to give
me an idea as to where you will be.
Thanks,
Keenan

I've been away awhile. But unless someone snags you to go sailing, I would
only note there are two great champagne brunch locations I like. And I
normally hate to spend money. Balboa Park's, can't remember the name, and
there is a great one at the marina located immediately adjacent to the
Chula Vista Marina. So you get the nautical part, too. In addition, the
Chula Vista Marina has a live 60's era band that plays Friday and Saturday
nights. Not sure about Sunday night. Great friendly place to dance with
the boats.
My brother-in-law owned a disco back in the day in Tijuana. I used to
spend weekends there having a great time. As Keenan pointed out, the
return wait in line could be a really long one. TJ is not as safe as it
used to be, either. But then, nowhere is. Old Town has some decent
Mexican food restaurants.
Balboa Park, apart from the water, will always be San Diego to me.
Have fun.

Saturday is the Yesteryear Race at San Diego Yacht Club. Should be about 40 wooden boats from up and down the West Coast and back east. They sometimes need crew.

Another unique pleasure out there is the Hotel Del Coronado. The island
itself and the bridge are memorable,..and the brunch there is remarkable.
Can't go wrong in the bay area.

San Diego has a great Zoo. When I was young-un they even had a TV shew, and that was even broadcast to the East Coast where we had our even more famous Bronx Zoo. I was in Columbus OH and visited their zoo. I hung out with a mountain lion, and got jumped by a tiger.

Well I’ve been in Tijuana all week but busy working the whole time. I’m not really in the mood to hang out here. I’m traveling to downtown/bayside Saturday afternoon until Tuesday morning. Have to pop back to TJ Monday. Balboa sounds good. Thanks for information.

Weather's not so good this weekend.
You might try the maritime museum. The Midway museum is also interesting.

It's great weather (thick overcast) for light skinned, melanocyte challenged, folks that don't need much sun to make vitamin D. I had a red headed girlfriend who grew up in Arizona, and when she moved to my homeland, land of the Lene Lenepe, love it.I just shamefully turned on me wall heater, spewing C02 into the atmosphere to kill the chill. We have a "BBQ" race this afternoon with the Santa Monica Windjammer's YC. If you wanna enter, go the the club and register before 1PM, it's a free race 'cause of Mother's Day and they almost cancelled the race till they realized it was on the annual schedule and some sailors would be bummed out if they did so . People who did last month's race can check in mid-channel. Go to the club website for list of courses, 1 thru 4.The sun will probably come out by 3PM or so, as it did yesterday. It's early "June Gloom" on the coast.Cheers,Ye Olde Shpritz
