Cal 2-29 rudder info
ra… [at] yahoo.com2018-06-04 22:16 UTC
Hi all, my first posting (I think).
I have play in my rudder. 1977 2-29 wheel steer.
So I am looking for pictures, info, drawings, part numbers, manufacturers, etc, anything, before I dive into this. What's inside the tube, is all the play taken out in the cap, is there bottom and top bushings, or roller type bearings, etc. I want to be well armed when I pull out so I spend as little time as possible in the yard.
I have also heard of folks doing this without pulling the boat. Which makes me think there is no thrust washer between top of rudder and hull tube.
So any info would very appreciated.

The gouge we usually get from Cal sailors is to make an anti-jiggle shim using thin plastic, such as from a plastic milk carton, then, throw the rest of the bottle overboard. NO! Just kidding, of course! Don't throw plastic in the ocean, unless it's an intact boat. But even a Cal that doesn't float makes a good fish grotto.Yesterday I saw a Cal 25 in Craigslist for BIG BUCKS. Must have been really really BIG bucks, 'cause the price was $100. Gosh that's just 1/10 of a 'boat buck'! Gosh, you can't even by a decent toilet for that much. AarrgGghh!

On our 29 had tiller and the bolt
Had worn a bigger hole in shaft
Stainless tube rather than re drill
And replace with bigger bolt.
I took some shim stock brass
And trimmed 1/2 ' strip 3 to 4 inches
By wrapping the old ss bolt with the
Brass i made a bushing to take up
Play.. tap tap tap. . Did one side
Then other..good luck..Edward

Caution if rudder is water logged
It might float away when unhook

Before you pull the boat out of the water and spend big bucks on rudders and tubes, check and see if your play in the steering is simply related to the quadrant under the steering pedestal. I bought my 2-29 in 2000 and it had a slight bit of play. It still does. I did not do anything about it and it does not worry me.

The rudders do float. I think what Edward is saying, if that if it is waterlogged, and you loosen the bolts while in the water, it might disappear to the bottom. Am I right Edward?

The rudder has a hollow stainless steel tube running thru it. I dont recommend dropping it in the water.
I have a 73 Cal 2-29 hull number 511, I believe. The rudder is run thru fiberglass, no bearing or seals. I had an an annoying klunk in no air. When Ivpulled the access plate for the emergency tiller gou could watch the rudder post move from side to side.
When I pulled my boat for bottom paint I dropped the rudder and checked the rudder post for corrosion. When I reinstalled it I took a coke bottle and cut it as a shim to fit the bottom of the rudder shaft. When it installed the rudder I also shimmed the top.
No more klunk.

Yes, that is the problem. I can see the shaft moving from side to side and it clunks when I turn the wheel had and fast back and forth.
What holds the shaft in place, or from falling out rather? Is it the quadrant?
