Well, I heard from BoatUS about the tow I got last Tuesday. $1300 and some change. I am not making this up. Cost me nada because I have towing insurance. It's not expensive, but if you don't have it you could get a real surprise. I never thought I would need it, but it was good to have that comfort. Real good as it turns out.David Dobbs Cal29 411

I not only agree with David, I concur. Pay for the unlimited. Those towing bills can add up real fast. Just once is all it takes. I remember someone getting lost in the fog out at Anacapa Island one time and they contacted boat US to come and get them and they did not have vessel assist. I think it cost them like $285 an hour for the boat us to come out there and locate them in the fog. -------- Original message --------From: "'Charlie Husar' hu… [at] gmail.com [Cal_Boats]" <Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com> Date: 6/3/18 7:24 PM (GMT-08:00) To: Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com, 'david dobbs' <tm… [at] yahoo.com> Subject: RE: [Cal_Boats] Towing I not only agree with David, I concur. One of my crew had to get a tow when he ran out of gas, with no wind, off Palos Verdes, heading for San Pedro. He pulled out his smart phone, got on the net, joined up, and was able to get towed for just the cost of the regular membership. Don't know exactly how that worked out, but, that's what he did. As a sailor of a small cruiser, other than a conked out motor where you'd have to wait for wind to come up the next day, hopefully not drifting into a lee shore where you'd have to get out the paddle, why would you need it? Rudder falling off? Losing your rig? Did the guy lost in fog off Anacappa Island have a dead GPS and no charts? Good argument for carrying a spare GPS and or spare batteries. I couldn't motivate myself to learn how to use my GPS until, one late afternoon, after racing in fog, I nearly got caught in the breakers and washed up onto the beach while feeling my way into Marina del Rey. The sound of the rollers, and the seeing the crest of the white water dead ahead was the only thing that saved me. I learned how to use my hand held that evening, as I had to continue the regatta the next day. Jerry of Shpritz. I once needed fuel for my last boat. Night time, fighting the tide in San Diego and burned through my 5 gal tank. They brought me 3 gal... $400 bill. No insurance at that time. > On Jun 3, 2018, at 7:19 PM, david dobbs tm… [at] yahoo.com [Cal_Boats] <Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com> wrote: > > Well, I heard from BoatUS about the tow I got last Tuesday. $1300 and some change. Hi, Jerry. I think you are making the point for insurance here. If we knew what might happen to require a tow, then we would plan to not have it happen. However, if we don’t know why we might need towing insurance, then it is hard to plan ahead for what we don’t know since we do not know what to plan ahead for. Or as Sergeant Shultz used to say, “I know nussing! I know nussing!” I trust I make myself obtuse. I have had Papoose almost 30 years and have been towed twice. Once to free me from the mud (see below) and once when my engine quit going into the marina. Both were by other boats from my harbor and both measured in feet rather than miles. I have on many occasions experienced engine failure over those years. I recall sailing under the Bay Bridge while I took the carburetor off to clean it. It was also the Bay Bridge I was sailing under when I fashioned a drive belt out of rope when the bearing for the alternator drive froze. But when I was dismasted and faced with making a long trip without the ability to sail that I signed up for BoatUS towing insurance. I am pleased with the peace of mind that it gives me and plan to keep it. Allen Sidebar (long story). I was leaving my marina and handed the tiller to a friend who had sailed with me for over 20 years while I sent below for something. It was low tide and he decided that I had been taking the channel markers wrong all those years and decided to run us aground (not his actual decision but the effect was the same). In fairness to him, the location is the intersection of two channels and the charts markings are ambiguous. The official rule on the markings and how to interpret them is that they are ambiguous and you need to look at a chart to know the correct way to go. Anyway, we ran aground. There was a power boat near and we asked for help. He sped off. Wow. Then another boat stopped and the friend, who is a world class swimmer, dove into the water and swam a line to the other boat that pulled us 20 feet to clear us from our out of channel condition. But I am always careful to wave at the guys as they go by. The boat is very distinctive because she's old and has lots of varnished mahogany and spruce, a rare thing where she lives. I hope that maybe I'd get a "pretty boat" discount if the need ever arises. We don't have tides and there is rarely a prolonged period without wind. I can sail almost anywhere I need to go, even up the river against the wind if absolutely necessary (lots of short tacks). On occasion I've even sailed into the slips at the marina, although they're moved the piers closer together than in the old days and that would be hard now without a favorable wind. But once I get to the marina, I can holler for help from another boater on the VHF. Had to do that once when the old outboard was being obstinate. Chris Campbell
