Return of DOVE, was: Re: [Cal_Boats] Atomic 4

Jerry,
RETURN of DOVE was a 33' Allied, not a "New York 35".
For an interesting read, check out "Home is the Sailor" the book that
Robin Lee Graham wrote after he returned from his voyage, it tells the
background of the movie and the adventures that Patti and Robin
experienced as they tried to re-enter "normal" life after being World
travellers they ended up moving to Montana and living "off-the-grid" with
their kids.
I still have my copy of the movie "The Dove", (no, not interested in
selling!) and enjoy watching it periodically, I actually saw it
originally in the theater during it's initial release. My Dad and I had a
great Father-Son night out, big thrill for an 11 year-old! (I think that
was my age at the time, I've forgotten when the movie was in theaters?)
I suspect the RANGER 23 was used due to the producers not being able to
find an old LAPWORTH 24, more so than any marketing decision by
Bangor-Punta, plus a lot of movie goers would never recognize the
substitution. (of course I did!). Still a GREAT film! Directed by Gregory
Peck, if I recall?

We've lost too many participants in this dangerous sport. (Are you going

a fellow on a 36' Catalina who had been in Marina del Rey to give Robin
Lee Graham a send off and welcome back during his epic round the world
sail as a teenager in the mid sixties. Apparently, my Cal 24-1 bears a
striking resemblance to the Lapworth 24 in which he rounded most of the
world, till he up-sized to an New York 35 when he reached the Caribbean.
The Lapworth 24 has 6" less beam, more free board, and a deeper cut away
full keel. If you haven't read the book, it's a great read. And it was
later made into a feature film using a bit more modern and sexy looking
Ranger 23. Probably a marketing decision by Bangor-Punta?

Ah stands corrected, judge. There are two or three Lapworth 24's I've come across in King Harbor and Santa Barbara. I raced against one in the Marina del Rey to Seal Beach Regatta a few years back. It has the same hull as the Gladiator, which can easily beat me going upwind. So I kinda think they could have got their hands on one if they'd tried. The fellow who sailed along side me said he was a ten year old when Robin left. And I guess Robin was...16? I think I rented the movie from Blockbuster some years ago, and I do recall reading about his adventures in the National Geographic, as I did the "Yankee" back in the fifties. And what is that sailor Robin Lee Graham doing now??
https://www.vrbo.com/337539
Everything is on the internet.
The Dove was a 1974 movie and yes directed by Gregory Peck.
This article seems to be a little out of date as it states in the end that
Robin still lives on the mountain, but I think at that vrbo site I pasted
above Robin stated they left the ranch for the lake.
