Rotten bulkhead.
John b2018-08-02 02:27 UTC
I found rot in my port bulkhead on my Cal 227 this evening. Unfortunately I
found it when the chainplate pulled out Fortunately due to dumb luck and
quick crew work there was no other damage. The problem now is finding the
teak plywood that I need to replace the bulkhead. Does anyone have a source
on the East coast (I am in Buffalo NY)? I really want to get back sailing
this season.

Check out Boulter Plywood. Great company to do business with. Extremely
good shipping costs. I purchased all the materials from them for my latest
dinghy project.

Many years ago I bought some teak and holly plywood from Public Lumber. It
was delivered to my driveway and shipping was reasonable. They have marine
grade teak plywood.

John, my local place is Exotic Lumber, Inc. It is in Annapolis about 2 miles from the Chesapeake Bay Bridge (they have a second place in Frederick MD). They request you call them for plywood stuff.

John, have you tacked down the source of what must be a long term leak? The chain plate hole is a likely spot, but water does not always enter where it comes out.
Take Care

I used Homestead for the cabin sole Teak and Holly plywood for my Cal 33-2.
Very nice people to deal with. But Boulter Plywood also has excellent
material and their shipping prices are much, much better. If I had known
about Boulter when I did the cabin sole I would have definitely used them.
